After watching startup I agree with you. Unnecessary Romance can ruin a would-have-been good plot. But the kind of romance I would have liked to see is similar to Mad dog if you have seen that drama.... the blink and you'll miss it type!

The first time he cried writer/director must have felt ok this is looking cute... Garner audience sympathy, discredit the notion that men dont cry. Done. Lets do that again LOL

If DM had shown even little bit of romantic inclination towards JP(as in she was confused btwn NDS and him... kinda like she had feeling for both but had to choose the better man) then DM-JP chemistry would be visible and much better than DD couple. But like you said she wasn't confused and Dodal chemistry is due to the writers grace.

I am not shipping any couple in startup but I have seen some say that JPs ultimate happiness lies in being with DM.On the contrary I feel he will be happy only if he is free of DM, physical emotional in all aspects... She isn't worth all the hassle plus I dont see any romantic chemistry.

It is rare, but he does get healed in the first two episodes.
But then you wouldn't get to see So Mun fighting the demons. And if he did fight them while having the disability he wouldn't have an upperhand.
