I think, Lee Dong Sik is protecting all the people in Manyang that are close to him like a family. He's protecting their secrets, not as a serial killer but because if a crime happened in a small town, all become suspects and when investigations are done, their secrets will be revealed. As if Dong sik is carrying all the burden because his reputation is already tainted and he doesn't want any of his friends to experience what he felt from 20 years ago.
I'm rewatching this today but skipped other scenes. I focus more on Hyong Sik and Dongbaek and it feels the same. This drama is not for everyone. I personally relate myself to Dongbaek, I'm a single mom with an eight-year-old son. I love the way Hyong Sik made her feel important and loved. I just wish I could find someone like him.
