Ya, the drama did injustice to the novel. Many things didn't make any sense and lots of plot holes as much had to be removed due to censorship. You were right not watch this and go through the disappointment.
But still I would like to make a suggestion as you are not into the mystical type ones, try to read the novel plot is really good. :)
This was sitting in my watchlist for a long time. I read reviews as to why was this so popular. And thus came to know of the novel.
Then, I for one read the novel before the drama and that was not good thing to do. Sequence of events was changed. This lead to the decisions taken by Lan Wangji (Wang Yibo's Character) lost their effect when you watch the drama. I am an absolute fan of the novel. I know they tried their best to portray this. I want to thank them(drama and its people) to bring me into the wonderful world of Wei Ying created by MXTX. Take Care. :)
