On Everybody Stand By Season 2 Oct 31, 2020
I see that there are a lot of comments about the S-card system, and again just to clarify, the initial round of grading were done through a panel of industry players. And yes, marketability is part of the assessment criteria.

If you hate this, then it's the industry's system you hate because they gamified this season to reflect the industry. Personally, I found it interesting because it forces everyone to take a good, meta look at the inequalities that factors into an actor's success and failure. It's good that it makes you feel angry and uncomfortable - the fact that it made the participants feel angry and uncomfortable - because that is the only way to inspire change.

GJM gave He Changxi an S card which sparked off a lot of anger. However, if you look at it, it just gives him an advantage. Perhaps you do not agree with GJM's assessment of HCX's potential, but there are also times in real life where someone sees potential in an underdog and gives you a helping hand. If HCX does not manage to make something out of the opportunity, then that's on him.

The show is an interesting, and I would even say daring, experiment. I much prefer it to last season's format, only because this actually gives EVERYONE at least two opportunities to shine before elimination, whereas last season it was almost instant death. It also makes for better entertainment.

Don't get me wrong. This show is above all - a business decision. They need viewers to stick long enough to build attachment to less high profile actors and actresses, so there will of course be your pretty faces that will be around in the initial stages. But it is also allowing some of the lesser known names like Lamu Yangzi to be better profiled! All in all, while I don't always agree with the directors, even the arguments between them highlight the difference in style and preference, because art is subjective.

The only thing is that perhaps this season's cast really skews too much towards newbies. But I'm willing to give it a shot to see how many of them will grow from the experience. There are already some of them who are brightening from the experience. :)
