After watching episode 12, I think I'm going to drop it. It's just boring. I watched 12 episodes, but it didn't offer anything particularly great to keep me going. Episode 12 did generate a little interest, but overall I think it's just an average series without much purpose. I don't think I need to continue with it. For me, it's a 5/10.
The first two episodes are a solid start, but they don't come close to matching the opening of Season 1. It's engaging and clearly taking the slow-burn approach, so I don't have any major complaints about the pacing yet. I just expected a stronger hook. The production value has gone up noticeably. The action choreography is top-notch, the editing is sharp, and the direction is good. My biggest issue is the screenplay. I don't think it's because the drama isn't for me. I knew the genre, setting, and theme before it aired, that's exactly why I was excited. My problem is with the execution. Too many plot holes, weak direction, and unconvincing character writing make it hard for the story to build momentum or deliver satisfying emotional payoffs. That's why it isn't generating the kind of impact I was expecting.

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm definitely one of the people who waited almost a year for Overdo. My expectations were through the roof. The cast, the Republican-era setting, the leaked stills, the costumes, the synopsis—everything made it feel like this was going to be a landmark C-drama. I was so invested that when it finally premiered, I was glued to the screen. Even after finishing 17 episodes, I couldn't bring myself to write anything because I kept hoping the next episode would give me that feeling I'd been waiting for. Unfortunately, it never did.
Don't get me wrong, Overdo isn't a very bad drama. But it's nowhere near the level I expected.
My biggest issue is the direction. It feels surprisingly weak. The dialogue doesn't leave much of an impact, the action choreography lacks intensity, there are too many plot holes, and the story feels like it's moving in circles instead of building momentum. The pacing isn't necessarily slow, but it rarely feels like it's progressing. Visually, it's stunning. The cinematography, costumes, and overall aesthetic are beautiful. But for me, the soul is missing.
Zhang Linghe also deserved much better writing. The drama wants him to come across as this intimidating, charismatic figure, but the script doesn't support it. His dialogue and character moments just aren't strong enough. One of the few scenes that really worked for me was his confrontation with Old huo in Episode 7. That was the kind of intensity I wanted throughout the drama.
The relationship writing is another weak point. They keep pushing the leads apart and bringing them back together, but the emotional payoff never feels earned. Instead of making me more invested, it left me wondering where the story was actually going. At times, it even feels like the drama is trying to recreate moments from other shows but it never lands with the same impact because the character writing isn't strong enough to sell it.
Maybe my expectations were simply too high, and that's on me. But when a drama builds this much anticipation, "good" or "average" just isn't enough. I wanted something unforgettable, and after 17 episodes, I'm mostly left feeling disappointed.

It’s a fantastic drama, and still a very good ending. But honestly, this drama really needs another season. It is just too good to end here. This feels like only the beginning, to be honest. There is still so much character development left, and we want to see more of these characters. There are a lot of possibilities and storylines still left to explore.
I especially loved the main characterGu Xu & Lin Shuang, was absolutely fantastic in this role. She just nailed the character completely. Her performance was so poised, calm, smart, impactful, and incredibly authentic. She had such a strong yet subtle screen presence, and every scene with her felt meaningful.
. However, I have to be honest, I think Jenny Zhang who played Jiang Xi is a completely miscast. She couldn’t portray the character very well, especially the emotional transformation and the deeper layers of the role. It just didn’t fully land the way it should have.
And about the antagonist Wei Ming, that guy really pulled off such a brilliant character. You hate him from your bones, and that shows how well the actor performed the role. He was excellent.
Overall, this is such a wholesome drama, beautifully written, with strong performances and characters that make you want another season immediately. 8
After watching Episode 4: this is too good of an episode, I’m loving it. The music, the chemistry, the settings, the performances, the humor... wow, such a joy. The director and writer really know the game. I just hope the stakes grow bigger and bigger, so they are pushed closer together, which will make our hearts feel at peace watching them.p
After watching Episode 13: it’s a good drama, but the subtitles suck, they’re the worst. The screenplay is moving like a tortoise; it’s slow as hell. The supporting cast performances are weak and disappointing. Only the main cast—Zhang Xiaofei as Lin Shuang, Huang Xiaoming as Gu Xu, and Li Zefeng as Wei Ming, are superb. The rest feel too bad in comparison. And the biggest problem of it all is the pacing. I know it’s a drama, so things are meant to unfold steadily and calculatedly, and the character development is there. But you still can’t defend bad screenplay direction and editing.
