Truly the most drama a drama can be

First I`d like to thank every person involved with this drama,as I`m well aware of how tough it must be to create, write and produce a drama, even if it results in such a bland show. This is my way of giving respect to everyone. And it also serves as a good enough segue way into my thoughts going forward.

After such a long time, I`ve decided to go back to my roots and take up review writing again. And it`s for a project which boasts both Woo Shik and Jung So Min. Actors I am usually very excited to see on my screen. *Usually*. Unfortunately, `Would You Marry Me` truly felt predisposed in becoming another favorite of mine, were it not for one pretty serious issue: THE STORY.

Upon reading the synopsis, one might think `Would You Marry Me` would be a very interesting cousin of a beloved(at least in my household) drama called `Because This is My First Life`. The long title, both feature Jung So Min down on her luck, cohabitation romance and a seemingly colder male lead who eventually becomes the most affable lover one might imagine.

You`d be wrong. There is a very crucial part of `Because This is My First Life` that is missing in `Would You Marry Me` and that is THE DEPTH. As I was watching this drama, I was reminded time and time again of older romcoms. But not in a complimentary way. More in a, why is this happening now? What is the purpose of this? sort of befuddled way. And when I finished this drama, I was ashamed to admit I did not remember anyone`s name, apart from the female lead. No one truly left any sort of an impression on me.

This drama started out great, is the sad part. It really did. The OST sounded light and airy, the direction seemed competent, if not a touch overzealous. This was supposed to be fun, finally. And yet...

And yet, even for a 12 episode drama, this one felt far too long. It felt like it had way too many sideplots, none of which were fleshed out to a satisfactory degree. And one trope in particular REALLY got on my nerves because it was truly the biggest part of why this drama collapsed on itself. Any sort of enjoyment past the use of that trope felt unearned and bland. I can`t think of any other quote to describe this drama but `What a shame`. It had so much potential, such star power, even the length seemed reasonable. It is like having a great recipe and ingredients of high quality to make a truly remarkable dish. Everything starts out great, you follow the recipe by the letter, you put your dish in the oven...and you burn it. That is how I would describe `Would You Marry Me`.

I could go on and on about how it could have been improved, because had it been tweaked even by a smidge, it could have been a good drama. Alas, as it stands, this one is truly the most average of shows you could watch. It makes for good background noise as you`re working or doing your tasks. It is inoffensive, bland and you will probably forget about it as the credits roll.

Bon Appetit!
