On The Vendetta of An Dec 17, 2025
My Take on the Chinese Drama: The Vendetta of An

Hey, so The Vendetta of An (aka Chang An Er Shi Si Ji) is this fresh historical thriller drama that just dropped on December 12, 2025, with 28 episodes total. It's directed by the Youku team and mixes mystery, political intrigue, and power struggles set in the Tang Dynasty during the Wude era. The story follows Xie Huai’an, a smart official from Huainan who's out for revenge after his dad's death. He teams up with generals, swordmasters, and strategists to take down the mysterious Huben Dark Guards led by Yan Feng Shan. It's all about shadow wars where brains and strategy win out over straight-up fights.

On the production side, it stars big names like Cheng Yi as Xie Huai’an, Liu Yi Jun as the power-grabbing ruler Xiao Wu Yang, and Xu Lu as Bai Wan. It's got that thriller-mystery vibe, perfect for folks who love twisty plots with unexpected turns. Tags like "Power Struggle" and "Political Intrigue" highlight how it's all about mind games and clever alliances, where guys like Xie Huai’an use sharp thinking to beat stronger physical opponents.

The core message here is spot on: smarts and sharp thinking often beat out sword skills. In The Vendetta of An, you see Xie Huai’an, who's no sword pro, crushing it with solid plans, situation analysis, and political maneuvers. It's not about brute force heroes; it's how a sharp mind can flip a whole kingdom's fate. We need more dramas like this in the Chinese entertainment scene—they're not just fun, but they inspire viewers to value brainpower. With so many action shows relying on physical violence, stuff that spotlights strategy and critical thinking can help create smarter, more thoughtful audiences.

To amp up that message, dramas like this could be a great way to introduce mindfulness techniques that boost mental sharpness and clarity. Mindfulness is basically being fully aware, a simple practice anyone can do to sharpen focus and cut down stress, making your mind as clear as the main characters here.

By watching quality drama like this, fans of Chinese Drama can get entertained and actually get smarter in real life. The Vendetta of An is a strong rec if you're tired of the usual action formula—proof that brains are the ultimate weapon.

Title Time Raiders
Yo, this ain't no Time Raider movie remake, fam! It’s a fresh TV series vibe based on the OG novel Grave Robbers Chronicles Volume 1: Seven Star Lu Palace (盗墓笔记之七星鲁王宫). This is where Wu Xie first claps eyes on Zhang Qiling, aka Xiaoge or Menyouping, and their epic bromance kicks off, spanning over 20 years of straight-up iconic vibes.

FIRST MEET-UP: Wu Xie and Xiaoge link up in Seven Star Lu Palace (Volume 1). Wu Xie’s a rookie in the tomb-raiding game, rolling with his uncle Wu Sanxing and the squad. Xiaoge slides in as this low-key, mysterious dude with next-level skills and a chill aura. He saves Wu Xie from some sketchy tomb danger, sparking their bond. Wu Xie’s straight-up vibing with Xiaoge’s calm energy, even though he barely knows the guy.

BROMANCE GLOW-UP: Their vibe levels up through wild adventures in the main series. In Snake Marsh Ghost City (Volume 2), Wu Xie starts calling Xiaoge “Menyouping” (Oil Bottle), which is peak bestie energy. Xiaoge’s not big on words but shows he’s got Wu Xie’s back with clutch moves, like keeping him safe from threats. By Cloud Top Heavenly Palace (Volume 3) and Yin Mountain Ancient Tower (Volume 6), Xiaoge’s out here sacrificing himself for the squad, and deep talks with Wu Xie cement their ride-or-die trust.

CUTE BRO MOMENTS: Their bromance is fire ‘cause Wu Xie’s all chatty and emotional, while Xiaoge’s this stoic, mysterious king. Wu Xie’s always trying to get Xiaoge to crack a smile or spill some tea, but Xiaoge’s love language is straight-up saving Wu Xie’s life or sticking close in danger. Fans eat up moments like Wu Xie digging into Xiaoge’s shady past or Xiaoge legit carrying Wu Xie to safety—talk about chemistry that hits different.

HEARTBREAK SPLIT: Shit gets real in The Map of the Gentleman (Volume 8). Xiaoge dips into the Bronze Gate at Changbai Mountain to handle his destiny, leaving Wu Xie crushed. Before he bounces, Xiaoge drops some deep advice about Wu Xie living a chill life, showing mad care. Wu Xie’s begging him to stay, and Xiaoge’s rare smile before he yeets into the gate? Absolute gut-punch. It’s clear Xiaoge’s Wu Xie’s rock, his emotional home base.

REUNION VIBES: In Daomu Biji: Restart, they reunite after years, and it’s pure feels. Wu Xie’s losing it with relief, probably throwing in a big hug when he sees Xiaoge back from the Bronze Gate. Xiaoge’s still quiet, but his looks and actions scream their bond’s still solid. In Notes in Rain Village, they’re chilling in Rain Village, with Wu Xie teasing Xiaoge and low-key domestic moments that give their bromance a warm, cozy glow-up.
On Legend of Zang Hai Jun 6, 2025
The real battle for Zang hai has not happened and has not been told.
Hopefully there will be a continuation story in sequel 2 and 3 that tells.

The real battle - Millennial Duel: Wang Zanghai and the Zhang Dynasty
as told in the 8 series of Daomu Biji novels - Daomu Biji Universe

I. The Architect’s Descent into Madness
In the twilight of the Yuan Dynasty, Wang Zanghai—master architect and feng shui genius savant — was dragged in chains to the cursed lands of the Eastern Xia Kingdom. Forced to rebuild the Heavenly Palace on the Clouds for the tyrant King Wannu, he witnessed the unspeakable: behind the Bronze Door, a new ruler emerged, "a monster wearing human skin," as he scrawled in terror on the Snake-Eyebrow Copper Fish. When he dared cross that threshold himself, his records dissolved into incoherent screams. What he saw was not immortality—it was cosmic horror, guarded zealously by the shadowy Zhang Clan.

The Zhangs, keepers of "The Ultimate" (终极), had woven themselves into history’s fabric. For millennia, they manipulated dynasties from their frost-veiled stronghold in Changbai Mountain, their Qilin Blood warding off demons and death. Their children, stripped of joy and trained to rob tombs by age fifteen, were weapons in a silent war4. To Wang, they were jailers of truth. His revelation became an obsession: "The secret must burn, even if the world burns with it."

II. The Poisoned Legacy
Wang’s vengeance unfolded in layers, each a tomb within a tomb:

The Copper Fish Prophecy: Three artifacts, hidden in sites of spiritual power (Seven Star Lu Palace, Paracel Tomb), encoded his discoveries. Each fish devoured by Zhang spies only deepened their paranoia—a psychological trap disguised as defiance.

The Bloodline Curse: He seeded an "inexplicable hatred" in his descendants, the Wang Family. Generations later, they hunted Zhangs without knowing why—a inherited rage festering like untreated wounds.

The Tomb of Whispers: His masterpiece, the Xisha Underwater Tomb, was a mausoleum of horrors. Here, he imprisoned the Forbidden Woman and White-Haired Drought Demon, creatures engineered to target Zhang physiology. Their very presence was a biological landmine.

Yet Wang’s genius bordered on delirium. In his journals, he mused: "Is the hunter not also the net? I weave my hatred into time itself."

III. The Zhang Unraveling
The Zhang Clan, already rotting from within, crumbled under Wang’s invisible siege. Their downfall pivoted on a sacred lie: the 3,000-Year-Old Baby, exhumed from a dragon-patterned chest during the Ming era. Promising "perfect immortality," the infant died—and the elders replaced it with a false Zhang Qiling. When the deception ignited civil war, Sizhou City drowned in blood and floodwaters.

Two tragedies birthed here:

The Lost Bell: The dying patriarch took with him a bronze bell—key to the chamber of The Ultimate. Its loss erased the clan’s purpose.

The Orphaned God: Eight-year-old Zhang Qiling, blood tainted by Qilin, was thrust into Sizhou’s ruins as a "blood bag." He crawled over his adoptive father’s corpse, clutching shards of a shattered legacy.

Wang’s ghost lingered in the chaos. As Zhang Haike confessed to Wu Xie: "His net spanned millennia... We fell by our own hands, yet his fingerprints stained the blade.".

IV. The Scars of Inheritance
Decades later, the war echoed in glacial caves and rain-slicked tombs:

Iron Triangle’s Burden: Wu Xie, Zhang Qiling, and Wang Pangzi faced Wang’s traps. In the Zhangjia Lou archives, they found thousands of severed right hands—a grotesque monument to Wang’s vendetta.

The Patriarch’s Silence: Zhang Qiling, now the last Zhang patriarch, bore dual curses: amnesia ("Heavenly Gift") and the weight of The Ultimate. His quest to reclaim the bronze bell was not triumph—it was atonement for a sin not his own.

Echoes at the Bronze Door: When Wu Xie finally glimpsed The Ultimate, he understood Wang’s desperation: "Not a source of power—a mirror. It showed us we were already monsters.".

V. Epilogue: The Cage and the Key
Wang Zanghai died entombed in Xisha, his body food for his own creations. The Zhangs faded to near-extinction, their secrets buried in snow. Yet in their duel, both revealed truths as old as China’s soil:

Wang’s Truth: "Knowledge caged is knowledge corrupted."

Zhang’s Truth: "Some doors exist because humanity cannot bear what lies beyond."

Zhang Qiling’s final act—sealing the Bronze Door—was neither victory nor defeat. As blizzards swallowed Changbai Mountain, Wu Xie heard his friend’s whisper: "We were never guardians. We were the lock." And in that stillness, the ghosts of architect and keeper blurred into one endless winter.

Symbolist Glossary:
Snake-Eyebrow Copper Fish → Fragmented truth in a broken world
Qilin Blood → Sacrifice masquerading as power
Bronze Door → The illusion of boundaries between past/present, madness/sanity
Severed Hands → The futility of holding onto legacy

“Time is the only tomb no one escapes. Yet here we dig—with fingers bloodied by our ancestors’ wars.”
― Wu Xie’s journal, Tibetan Sea Flower

Why tragic love story?
My description above is a story idea for the next sequel, considering that Wang Zanghai's role in the novel has not been fully told.

On the Novel, Wang Zanghai (汪藏海) is an antagonist in the Daomu Biji Universes (novel series and its television adaptations). He was a Feng Shui master and architect who lived sometime during the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty.
He moving to Dong Xia Kingdom, becomes the Minister of War, created the Snake-Eyebrow Copper Fish and reconstructed the Heavenly Palace on the Clouds. He also built the Xisha Underwater Tomb for his burial site.

He is mentioned in the television series The Lost Tomb 2, The Lost Tomb 2: Explore with the Note, and Tomb of the Sea. He appears as a companion in the mobile game Time Raiders. The television series Legend of Zang Hai was originally written based on Wang Zanghai. However, it was later changed to be separate from the Daomu Biji novel series.

The love story between Zang Hai and Xiang Antu is primarily explored in the drama Legend of Zang Hai (originally titled Tibetan Sea Opera), which was initially conceived as a spin-off of Daomu Biji but later reworked into an independent narrative. While the novel Daomu Biji and its sequels (Zang Hai Hua, Sha Hai) do not directly feature this romance, the drama retains thematic and stylistic connections to the Daomu Biji universe.

Prediction for the Continuation of The Legend of Zang Hai

Based on the success of the Legend of Zang Hai series and the original story in the novel series The Lost Tomb, I suspect there will be a sequel 2, and of course, I hope Xiao Zhan will still play Zang Hai in the next sequel.
If so, then here is the prediction of the next story in sequel 2

If we read the novel, Cang Hai Xi Lin (藏海戏麟), also known as The Legend of Zang Hai, serves as a prequel to The Lost Tomb and a sequel to the TV drama The Legend of Zang Hai. The story continues the fantastical tale of Wang Zang Hai after he moving to Dong Xia Kingdom, becomes the Minister of War, including his time in the Dong Xia Kingdom, constructing the Cloud Palace of the Summit, and slaying the Wannu King.

Prediction of Story Continuation
Referring to the novel Zang Hai Plays with the Qilin, which forms the basis of this series, until episode 40, Wang Zang Hai still carries the Ghost Seal, a mysterious artifact capable of summoning the Yin Soldiers. and he said to his lover, Xiang An Tu, "Ghost Seal still has many mysteries, and I will try to solve the mysteries."

This seal is believed to be the key to unlocking the Bronze Gate and unveiling the great secrets behind the Cloud Palace of the Summit. With this seal in his possession, Wang Zang Hai is likely to encounter various mystical creatures such as the zombie-like Mi Lo Tuo, the terrifying Lady Banshee, corpse insects, the human-faced bird, and the colossal serpent Zhu Jue Yin (Candle Nine Yin).

Throughout his journey, Wang Zang Hai may continue to use his mortal wisdom to challenge gods and demons, alter the course of the stars, and execute seemingly impossible plans. His goal is to save both his lover and himself, as well as to uncover the truths behind the unresolved mysteries.

🎭 Themes and Story Tone
The next sequel series maybe combines elements of action, adventure, drama, fantasy, history, mystery, and the supernatural. While not heavily focused on horror, the story features various mystical creatures and phenomena that add tension. Additionally, it explores Wang Zang Hai's ambition and career development, along with a deep tragic love story.

✅ Conclusion
With its rich background and complex characters, this story promises a continuation filled with intrigue, action, and mystery. Fans of the series can look forward to further revelations about the Ghost Seal Mystery and its role in the fate of Wang Zang Hai and the world around him.

⭐ IMDb Rating: 9.5/10

The Legend of Zang Hai is a visual and emotional triumph, elevated by Xiao Zhan’s commanding performance and exquisite cinematography. Xiao Zhan brings layered intensity to the role of Zang Hai, portraying his evolution from a grieving survivor to a strategic mastermind with remarkable nuance. His control over emotional beats—grief, resolve, and moral conflict—is consistently compelling and a clear highlight of the series.

Visually, the drama is a masterpiece. The cinematography captures both the grandeur of ancient palaces and the intimacy of personal moments with equal finesse. Every frame feels intentional, with dynamic lighting and sweeping camera work that enhance the storytelling without overwhelming it.

The high IMDb score of 9.5 reflects both critical acclaim and fan adoration, cementing the series as a standout in 2025’s global drama landscape. For those drawn to intricate character arcs and cinematic beauty, The Legend of Zang Hai is not to be missed.

Can you feel and observe that actor Xiao Zhan has succeeded in expressing Zang Hai's mysterious smile, which is full of meaning, full of interpretations of clever wit, strategic plans, and plans for revenge?

and it's expression of the OST

I restrain the sharpness in my eyes
Clutching dangerous desire in my palm
Raging waves hidden in my sleeves, thunder without sound
Schemes may be deep, but not deeper than my gaze

Intrigue is the armor that protects me
Righteous strategy is the blade and spear I wield
With the madness of endurance, I cleanse the world's filth
The night isn't dark — only because my heart burns hot

Legends of the Condor Heroes is Secretly the World's Biggest Movie
Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants might be the biggest movie in the world now, but it's completely ignored in English language media

Published Sun, 02 Feb 2025 21:15:07 -0600 by Adi Tantimedh

If you don't know Chinese, you might not know that right now, the biggest movie in the world is Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants. This blockbuster adaptation of Jin Yong's classic wuxia epic novel, The Legend of the Condor Heroes, is one of the defining works of the wuxia genre. It stars Xiao Zhan as hero Guo Jing and is being hyped as director Tsui Hark's biggest comeback in decades. It opened this week for Chinese New Year, the biggest Chinese holiday and movie season of the year, and has already racked up 300 million ticket sales. You wouldn't know any of this because until Deadline reported on the Chinese New Year opening day box office earnings, no Western media had written about it at all.

The original novel of The Legend of the Condor Heroes has an official English translation from a UK and US publisher, all four volumes of it, and is bigger than Lord of the Rings – virtually every Chinese person knows it, and not just in China. Tsui Hark is one of the most influential action directors in the world next to John Woo, who has helped shape action movies in Hollywood and the rest of the world since the 1980s and 1990s, not counting his two forgettable Hollywood-funded Jean-Claude Van Damme movies in the 1990s. Yet there's not a single article written about this movie in English language or Western media, not even the Hollywood trades beyond a report on the box office charts.

Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants is in the top 10 at the Chinese box office as of this writing after Ne Zha 2, Detective Chinatown 1900, and Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, but it has the most social media buzz of out of all the 2025 Chinese New Year blockbusters so far with star Xiao Zhan and Tsui Hark in every Chinese media outlet promoting the movie. Xiao Zhan has a huge fanbase in China and abroad, and this movie might have a bigger audience outside China than the other three hits. You wouldn't know this if you didn't follow Chinese language media since any pop culture and movies from China and the East are considered niche in the West despite being huge hits, just like anime is. None of the other current Chinese New Year blockbuster hits have the global cultural footprint of Condor Heroes or potential for international export.

Sony has acquired the worldwide rights to Legends of the Condor Heroes: The Gallants and will release it theatrically in the US on February 21st. It's already listed on Fandango.
