Yes, I agree the drama portrayed the relationships better :) When the director adapted the drama to be more realistic…
I agree with you. The drama portrayed the relationships so much better, while the anime's focus is on the game of Go itself.
The anime is still good (so fans don't get me wrong), the matches are exciting and all, and I felt that I enjoyed the anime in part because I first enjoyed the drama =D
I got started playing the game for fun because of the drama, and the anime expanded upon my technical knowledge, so both have different strengths indeed. Yet in the end, I like my heart strings being pulled, which the drama does so well, haha.
I really enjoyed this drama, and I'm watching the anime now because of the drama.
Personally, I felt the drama is a huge improvement over the anime and enjoyed the drama more than the anime.
I feel that the drama did a good job of portaying the friendships and bromance way better than the drama ever did. It did a better job of portraying Shi Guang or Hikaru's transformation more than drama ever did.
That time skip there and Shi Guang breaking up in the beginning of the show was a nice addition and made the whole plot a lot better.
The scene of Shi Guang jumping for joy in episode 25 is one of the most enjoyable scenes. I recorded that clip to watch to encourage myself at times :)
I tried to watch the anime as its own show as other people advice, but I just can't. Lol
