The beginning of the first episode had me like, "hmmm..." I wasn't sure and thought about dropping it because her bio brother looks like an idiot and it seemed low budget, but I stuck with it for the next two episodes and it was so cute and sweet and refreshing. I adored it. It was just the thing I needed coming off of a tense emotional drama.
I've never seen any of her previous work, so I'm unbiased. I think she's doing pretty well in terms of acting…
The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion is on my watch list but I've just never got around to it, always passing it over in favor of something else. Eventually though, I'll get to see this chemistry with ZZ that everyone is talking about.
Ju jing yi and joseph zeng make a good pair..honestly i dont get it why many are hating on jjy’s acting..i think…
I've never seen any of her previous work, so I'm unbiased. I think she's doing pretty well in terms of acting to character. Now Joseph...I've seen him in Ultimate Note and became a fan. I like the chemistry between them.
Usually, I never have any problems with Tencent's subtitles, them being one of the better ones in such regards. But I watched the first two episodes via WeTV and they seemed very vague and automated and some things that I knew the meaning of, were translated very far off base. I was able to grasp what was happening only through context clues and from the small amount of words that I've become familiar with since watching Cdramas.
However, as a native English speaker, the subtitles were confusing AF.
I'm hoping that once it's out a little longer, they'll go back and edit/translate them properly. Fingers crossed.
Man that last episode! Ugh it has a happily ever after with a well defined ending BUT THAT WAS SO NOT WORTH IT.…
I cried like a baby and had to go wake my mother up to share the pain because I couldn't handle it. LOL. It was so beautifully tragic and well done in terms of acting, story, etc... but my heart...my poor heart.
I watched this when it was first airing and now I'm rewatching it in my spare time. I still love it just as much, if not more. Originally, I watched it for Wang Yibo, but I discovered Zanilia Zhao through it and became a fan of hers as well.
The romance between the leads never bothered me. I thought it was cute because a girl with her background, and tomboy-ish characteristics would for sure be awkward when it came to romance. I never thought their chemistry was lacking, but rather that it made sense for the characters the actors would trying to portray. It's a slow-build.
Side note: The one time she wears typical girl attire, she feels so uncomfortable that she hides--that says a lot right there if you can read between the lines.
Another thing that I like so much is the strong female lead. A'fei never reacts like the annoying, overly cute, super loud female leads that are so rampant in C-dramas, which was refreshing. I think there needs to be more representation of strong female leads.
As for Wang Yibo...I thought he did an excellent job portraying a character that is essentially the opposite of the one he played in The Untamed. Xie Yun was playful and mysterious and A'fei's number one supporter throughout. Plus, I liked his hair and outfits.
Compared to Ultimate Note and Tomb of the Sea, which both came out a few years later, it felt lacking. I greatly enjoyed UN and TotS. This adaptation...not so much.
I thought Yang Yang did a great job as Zhang Qiling; however, it was not my favorite performance of his. Futhermore, I enjoyed the actor who played as Zhang Qiling in UN and TotS better. But, I believe this has more to do with the screenwriting, etc. than it does with the actors. Though, I do want to note that I did not care for the actor who played Pangzi (Fatty) at all. For him, I don't know what happened but his character was annoying AF and detracted greatly from my overall enjoyment. It might have been bad acting or a bad script. Maybe both. Nevertheless, I can't think of a polite way to express how much I disliked him...
As for the pacing, it felt rushed and jumpy--almost as if they had to tried to cram a bunch of information into just 10 episodes, resulting in a subpar product. It should have been longer, because many things remainder unanswered or not properly dealt with. And the scenes/answers that it did have, didn't have enough oomph to really make an impression.
Honestly, I watched Un and TotS before this and found that this wasn't even necessary for my understanding of the storyline. If I had watched this adaptation first, I wouldn't have bothered watching the others and might have missed out. So just know that you won't miss anything if you watch UN and TotS. ^_^
I'm on episode six now and seriously pondering whether or not I'll drop it. Probably will.
And then THAT happened...
Patience is a virtue that I don't always possess. LOL.

Basically, I enjoyed it.
