Title Squid Game Spoiler
It was a fun couple of couple of hours with a slow start and a lacklustre and cliche end. You may as well skip the last 3/4 of the last episode. There nothing good there. Just setting up for a sequel.
The games weren’t great though probably more fun for a Korean audience. Theres not a lot of thought required from the audience to work it out many plot points. Certain twists I guess early on too.
Ali’s character was the only one that offered something new and they didn’t utilise that.
The thing that bothered me the most was the police officer. He seemed integral to the plot until they just killed him and then it quickly became apparent that his character was pointless. Given the hints to his backstory and the bizarre way he behaved (ie. going rogue on his own and killing someone with no evidence to what was happening almost immediately) I thought they would flesh him out more than just having the kinda obvious twist that his brother was the guy in charge which really just felt like a lot of effort for a small cameo moment.
Overall I enjoyed elements but it’s forgettable. If you’re looking for something similar to AIB this is only similar in that it shares the same sub genre.

Title Warrior Baek Dong Soo Spoiler
I wish they had actually made Woon do some pretty bad things. I feel like if they had the ending would have made more sense. Plus they didn’t developed the relation ship between Dong Soo and Ji sun. By the time they had just lumped them together for the happy ending I was convinced he didn’t see her in a romantic way anymore (as it had been so long since they had even interacted and instead they made it seem like he and Jin joon would developer a relationship) and that she never saw him that way as she had more interactions with Woon. The ending really felt like the writers got told last minute that the drama was going to be 10 episodes fewer than they first thought so they just tried to wrap it up tidily.

The sound design and mixing in this is really poor. Their voices are always peaking and othertimes they are so quiet I had to turn the volume to max just for one scene. A lot of the fights sound like they’ve recycled some old school sound effects too.
On Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku Aug 15, 2021
Putting the musical element to the side, the filmmakers really failed to capture what made Wotakoi special. It was a pretty unfaithful adaption which is pretty ironic given that the source material is all about fan’s passion for things like anime. You’d think they’d understand people not wanting the film to divert som much from the anime.
