Hahaha, it was the fashion of the time. A lot of other dramas set in Tang actually dilute the costume designs to modernise the aesthetics. The costume for maids in Prince Hai residence is definitely fugly and I give big props to Li Yi Tong for adorning the ugly thing. But historically that costume is very authentic because I seen them in Tang Dynasty paintings lol. I do wonder some of the guys' patterned outer robes are historically accurate? The yellow and blue number Xu Kai adorn in eps 1 and 2 seem too modern for the time lol.
Am I the only one who struggle to finish a drama because of Li Yi Tong? I still haven't finish her Sword Dynasty…
I think Li Yi Tong is one of the better actresses around. Her acting is very suttle which I liked. IMHO, everything she does seems natural unlike some other actressess (looking at you Yang Mi, Dilraba)
Out of all the 2021 Costume Dramas I have seen so far, I liked this one the best. I have seen The Sword and The Brocade (completed), The Rebel Princess (partial), Palace of Devotion (partial) and The Long Ballad (partial). I have seen up to 8 eps on eng subs and up to 14 on chinese raw. And I don't know any chinese, so I am guessing what happened in eps 9 to 14.
Things I liked: 1. The production quality. You can tell they spent a lot of money on costume, sets and assessories. I saw a video of how they built an entire palace for the shoot. The Fu residence was a very detailed set not used after episode 5. 2. Cinematography, Colour Grading and Lighting. The picture frames have the silk scroll look to them. Although there's an orange tint to everything, greens, reds and blues still come through sharp and strong. 3. Acting. Everything is over-exaggerated. The movements, and the facial expressions are cartoony at times (I love how a maid approached the 3rd Madam of the Fu Residence to tell they have visitor to Chu Mu's expressions after he has done something naughty. It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I think it suits the story and the setting they wanted to tell and create. I don't know how it will transition to more serious part of the drama down the track. But so far so good. 4. The Editing. I hear they cut down like 14 or so eps from the count due to censorship. So far everthing is logical and flowing ok. I can guess which parts may have been cut (Chu Mu's Training, Fu Rou's Marriage Complications, etc) but so far I don't think I miss those scenes. It might even have worked out better because the story progress in steady pace (but slightly unrealistic).
Anyway, I am now hooked and keep checking youtube for new updates.
PS. This is not important but is Fu Rou's mother a concubine? They say 2nd Madam and 3rd Madam which will mean they might be married to 2nd and 3rd brother of Fu family?
Also, if they follow history, Chu Mu's brother in law, Prince Hai going to get involve in the power struggle to become the next crown prince? He seem pretty harmless so far. Interesting non the rest.
In subsequent episodes, they've mentioned Liu E's son is older. The wife's own son is just taller hehehe ?
Hahaha good to know. So we can assume that the main wife conceived after the couple return to the capital. Such devotion to Liu E by the 3rd Prince. ahahaha
Currently on my 7th episode. It is not bad but it is not good either. I can see greatness in this drama but too much is cut out to take viewers on the journey. The way they cut the scenes together is peculiar. I feel like important scenes are cut out but unimportant scenes are left in. For example, Liu E saving grandma in the flood desaster is very unnecessary and left in but the lead couple escaping from evil brother's troop is cut out. I hear they went from over 100 eps to 81 eps to now 61 eps. When you cut out this much, of course the drama will feel disjointed. But I question the decisions to leave some scenes in and some scenes out. I wish there's a 100 eps plus director's edit that we get to see to fully judge the series on its merit.
ps. I wonder how the main wife got pregnant when the husband (3rd price) has been out dealing with the flood and chasing after his beloved Liu E. hahaha.
