Cdramas are dubbed, it's hard to find one that's not actually. Since Chinese is not one language, it has many different verities and dialects, they dub with "clear" easy to understand Pu Tong Hua aka standard Chinese (which is the Bei Jing dialect). Chinese is a tonal language, pronunciation and enunciation is very important, unlike Korean for example. Korean is understood even when spoken in a dialect, tones are different in different Chinese variations and dialects, and even some sounds are said differently. For example, the Sh sounds is often pronounced as an S sound in Taiwanese Chinese, while the Ch sound is a Ts in Guang Dong etc... not to mention the totally different Chinese languages like Canto Chinese. It might be annoying for foreigners because there are subs, but it very well makes sense for them.

Maybe you just didn't get it? and that's okay. They didn't just make the movie like this without a purpose, you're meant to uncover what they mean. Everything was well thought into, it holds so much depth and beauty the way I see it. You just needs to analyze it a bit, think about the names- the title, the abruptness of the shift in scenes... I don't mean to be rude or anything, please don't take it as so. I just think it's sad you thought it's a waste of time.

I'm literally only staying for Byong Sook, the drama is very badly written. It's too much, ughhhh literally Byong Sook X Il Sam is the only good thing about it. Byong Sook is introduced very badly, offensively actually. They make her whole character and qualities revolve around her being fat it was painful to watch, but then her love line is sooooooooo cute it redeems the offensive portray of fatness (even though she's not actually fat she's literally midsized). The typical misogamy is very present in the series nonetheless; the women are all incapable and uneducated for example, I hate this shit.

Bestie the ending broke my heart!!!! It's so unfair! Their young hearts, their young love unfulfilled😭😭😭😭 it hurts more because of how realistic it is too like damn my fucking heart! Fuck!

The reason is never mentioned, only that they knew each other before and they had some hostility towards each other. It's probably something to do with a girl though, that's why A Seo picked Li A as his revenge plan.

I started this thinking it was about an actual merman lol.
After the first episode I thought it was going to be your typical angsty teen drama but I was pleasantly surprised!! I expected Woo Hyuk to be a romanticized jerk and Geun an angry, angsty kid, I thought they were going to have some stupid toxic masculinity rivalry where the girl is in the middle.
However, I really am quite pleasantly surprised!! The boys in the drama are actually soft! They're soft, in touch with their feelings to some extent, and display friendship and love for one another, not some toxic rivalry and inferiority complex. I hate Yeon Yeong's character she's very toxic, Geun deserves better. I love that Li A chose herself and removed herself from A Seo and Jae Beom's rivalry, Jae was very toxic and Seo stirred up her feelings for a revenge. It was the right call to chose herself.
Over I'm happy of the drama world break through, kids these days deserve better than the toxic messy dramas of the past. Cute easy watch!

I think what hurts most about this drama is it's reality; Hua Biao's life doesn't magically get better, He Mei doesn't get good grades at the end, Yang Xi needs to work hard and rely on her family and friends to succeed, and the future awaits. The reality of life's unwillingness and cruelty, realizing the reality of people's individuality and complexity along with your own, learning the heartbreaking truth of adulthood and it's difficulties, the uncertainty of the future and the fear of the unknown.

I thought this drama was going to be a typical love rivalry in a coming of age setting, instead it's a story about life, the journey of growing up, maturing, getting hurt, being lost, not understanding life and still having to go on. They don't paint a beautiful picture of life but a realistic one, simplicity that goes with complexity, pain along fleeting happiness, fortune in your situation and misfortune in your background.

I both love and hate the ending, I really wanted to see them all older and happy, but that's the reality of it, the future is an unwritten page.


On a different note, I really appreciate the lack of toxic masculinity and misogyny in this drama. Yang Zhao understands he's an adult and doesn't take advantage of He Mei's feelings nor do they romanticize such a relationship (even though it's set in the 90s China). Li Yu doesn't push his feelings on Yang Xi, he loves her purely in his heart and with his actions, doesn't get toxic and treat her like something to fight over and win, he respects her feelings. Finally, I really appreciate the scene about reading comics in class, the principal said "for the boys confiscate their comics; for the girls, make them feel shame", this is exactly the approach society takes with males vs females. They not only highlight such a double standard and manipulation tactic, they also make the male teacher who used it apologize.

Beautiful drama over all, I'm very hurt. I love it.

The usage and portray of such "sensitive" topics is where this industry fails; if young fans see romanticized abuse, r*pe, or grooming it can make them believe that's how love looks like. It also gives groomers, abusers, and sickos the opportunity to not only excuse their behavior due to the romanticization and normalization of such "tropes", but also to use it to seek more victims. Try looking at the big picture, socially, morally, and you know, outside your small mindedness. The media is every abuser, manipulator, groomer, and sicko's best friend; thanks to such disgusting, toxic crap. Since you're so smart and well aware, you should already know this huh, hot stuff? The irony and utter blindness is exactly why the world allows such a drama to exist, ignorant, small people with a big ego, like you.

I'll have you know that Yamapi or Yamashita Tomohisa was recently involved in an underage scandal, it didn't blow up anywhere and no one really cared because this kind of crap is so normalized in Japan. These kind of shows only worsen the situation, it gives men an excuse and make girls believe and trust them, not knowing they're being groomed.

I can't believe people actually like this drama, one of the worse and most over rated dramas ever. Everything about it is bad it pisses me off.
