I think it's easy enough. Pei Shou Yi has emotional distress, so she can't feel any emotion ... she believes it. But when Yu Zhen Xuan explains each item in the box to him, I think Pei Shou Yi understands that he - somehow twisted - he really wants to take care of Yu Zhen Xuan. Pei Shou Yi probably doesn't quite understand, but he wants to capture this ephemeral feeling. So he calls Yu Zhen Xuan inside. The smile that follows is Pei Shou Yi's social ability to fit in with the crowd. I think there are a lot of things to explain for this second pair in S3.

I can understand, it's logical, but it's not that simple if you apply the idea to European historical novels. The nobles had lovers, not concubines! : D I would like to read more "oriental" historical novels (China - Japan - Korea ), but they are not easy to find translated. Only a few arrive and I don't have time to study oriental languages ... unfortunately. My brother studied some Japanese, but he is younger and he had fewer responsibilities. Now he has had to stop too.

Cause it is not usual in drama a similar gap. I think (i.e.) Oh My General, he has concubine but still is younger. Also the first wife was quite younger (or seems to me), and she was the 1st WIFE for him. The first - not - concubine.
I don't see the S3... really. I have 2 ideas (based on some gesture of the actor in the interviews) 1 - 3 special episodes 2 - fanservice to keep up the attention
