this is so fun! really reminiscent of count of monte cristo in terms of scope and stakes (and disguises lol). xiao zhan also does a great job of “selling” you the character where at 2 different points throughout today’s episodes i considered this might be IT in terms of plot, kind of like you do when reading the count of monte cristo too. at this point, anything is possible, and yet, instead of making the story boring because it’s so open, it makes me want to root for ZH to see not if, but how he’ll deliver the stakes (can i say count of monte cristo-esque again?). also, loving the visuals. so far so good!

i’m not 100% sure as i believe even in the show they left it for the interpretation of the viewer.basically,…
yes, i love that part so much, how he’s basically giving YL a cheat sheet on what to do: listen to your older brother & teacher (aka XW himself) and father, and don’t trust the officials (aka duke of xue)

someone pls explain the missing part of the speech for me that ZZ talked about. i replayed but i really can't…
i’m not 100% sure as i believe even in the show they left it for the interpretation of the viewer.
basically, XW gives his speech, which is a big deal because it’s meant to be like a life lesson that YL carries with him forever. there is no specific content that the speech must have, so we can infer that whatever subject XW chooses is directly relevant to what he wants to tell YL.
he borrows from the 5 cardinal relationships, which is a traditional confucian concept (and used in law, which is why ZZ asks him about it, ig the law nerd in him can’t accept the omission LOL)
i don’t remember the exact translation, but it should be something like:
1) younger submits to older
2) student submits to teacher
3) son submits to father
these are all direct reminders that are immediately applied to the situation at hand, as YL wants to act rash, while his father and XW subdue him (if he wasn’t held down we can infer what would happen)
but there is actually 2 more cardinal relationships. 4th is that wife submits to husband, and it makes sense that XW didn’t mention it, since YL is a man. however, the last one is
5) subject submits to ruler
this is the one that ZZ asks about. it basically means that you should obey officials, from guards to the emperor, because of their position,
this is where the speculation comes in:
effective immediately, it can serve as a “cheer up” to YL to not listen to the imperial edict, since not everything is lost yet.
if foreshadowing, it can mean to rise against the emperor when the time is right. not sure if XW has the same fate as in his last lifetime, but he keeps on saying he’s not a “good person”, it seems like he might be trying to bring the yan family on his side in the case of an eventual coup d’etat from him, like what happened in the previous lifetime.
it’s kind of like asking “when the time is right, will you go against the emperor/some other big official for me?”

Why the fake DZY get so much screen time ? Is she a new nepo baby that get support to shine in this drama ? I'm…
this drama is sponsored (?? funded? im not sure what the actual connection is but the connection is there) by the shanghai theatre academy. the fake DZY is a graduate of that school. c-netz are complaining about it too, that they’re foregoing the plot and timing for the sake of turning this drama into one big “look at our graduates” advertisement.
