I've only read Book 1 & Book 2.
In the novel, the lead's ability is a natural genetic lottery thing. Book 1 ends hinting at RAN-X, the research on triggering this ability to become a Perceiver (time loop thing). Right at the start of Book 2, he's forced to drink a potion (Enhancer) and was pushed back in time.
