About your feeling of mediocrity of the story, the story of YUMI CELLS is about what is going on in real life. And our day to day life is really nothing but mediocre unless we belong to the Elite, the smart and the gifted. That is why it is very relatable because its the reality of most people's life :-)

May I enlighten you a little bit, first the story is really about the cells not Yumi, she is just the superficial representation. Second about the poop joke, i think the reason why it is incorporated because it is a human body's phenomena that people sometimes feel a shamed to express or to show unlike kids whose expressions have no boundary.
