OMG we'®e really hooked to be spending our time in this page throughout the entire week, or at least I am... Little insights as a mental health professional because some people can't seem to figure out whether Sa-eon loves Heejoo or is just 'fond' of her. HE ABSOLUTELY DOES AND FOR 20 years probably...
1. He may be smart and canny, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's emotionally smart and knows how to express his feelings.
2.It's obvious he's been through trauma as well, only time will tell how bad it was, but an eating disorder and social withdrawal were the result of that trauma. Even if they didn't have any birth secrets, this family is highly dysfunctional and everything is a strategy to them. Therefore, repressing his feelings so they won't be the target of another strategy is probably the best he can do with them. It's also obvious from the fact that he only talks about Heejoo to his bestie, the only person he probably trusts (even if he doesn't explicitly say it's about him).
3. But let's face it: the jealousy ('What about me? You've known me for 20 years...'), the certainty he had over knowing everything about her comes from observing her for very long, and let's face it, he's not the type of person who will bother to look at you twice if he doesn't care. The statement he gave to the ambassador, that he wants to shield her from everyone around him (whom he obviously hates) was sincere. She is indeed his biggest weakness, because she's the only one he cannot see hurt. The fact that when the kidnapper first called, he made sure she was somewhere safe first (even if her worthless mother lied) and even more important, when he regained consciousness after the blast, the first thing he did was make sure she was ok... Honestly, this can go on and on, especially ep 4's last scene which if by far one of the most beautiful, indirect confessions I've seen, the word LOVE HHJ is written with capital transparent letters on his forehead.
BUT: he probably thinks that she doesn't feel the same way, which is why he never told her about his, in order not to burden her, but also in order to avoid a rejection which would hurt him. Avoiding is what trauma victims do the most. Heejoo does it by hiding her voice and he does it by hiding his feelings... All in all, they've both loved each other for 20 years, they've both suppressed it, they're both probably emotionally numb abd have forgotten how to express themselves... They had to survive these horrible families after all...
