I think the ending suited her and was interesting. Through this experience, she was able to learn how to new connections can bring a new type of warmth she'd never experienced before which was lovely to see. But just because you have this experience doesn't fully change you as a person straightaway or maybe she never wanted to change in the beginning.
Maybe she was scared to get hurt again? Maybe she was scared all this would go away too soon ? Or if she continued there'd be a day where they don't accept her anymore and maybe reject her? -I feel like that's what she went through in her past. So the fact she was able to experience this was beautiful enough and while the ending was bittersweet, I think she had a lot of think about and while she might have went back to her old ways of running away, there's a new option of knowing there's always a place for her in that town should she be ready to go back.
But I totally get where you're coming from too - can be a bit frustrating to watch when you see growth but then they run away again , esp for a 2hour film haha
