This is bec there was a very successful time travel romance drama about a girl traveling to Qing Dynasty and got into some complicated relationships with a couple of princes and some girls after watching it actually tried to kill themselves hoping to be able to do soul time traveling. I know at least one girl ended up truly killing herself. Yes, Chinese people are that stupid! And then the public was like oh, the government needs to do something. The production company should be fined blah blah blah. Yeah,yeah,yeah, they would even blame the government for not being able to find a bf/gf, what do you expect from those spoiled brats. So to save the hassle...
From the perspective of ex gf Xia Qing, isn't Yu Tu a bit 渣（zha, meaning trashy, bad)? He never considered her stance or her pressure if he chooses to pursue his dream. He dated her bec he didn't need to invest much? What about the investment she will have to make into this relationship if they had continued to date? Granted she knew his plan before they started dating, but it sounds like she was a tool instead of a gf for him. I can use you to satisfy my physical and family needs and you don't need to bother me in any other way. I don't know how they dated. But maybe if Yu Tu showed more caring and empathy, Xia Qing wouldn't be so pushy.

As a Chinese living in the US for half of my life, I've never given a thought about how to define idol drama. I would call YAMG an idol drama as well simply because it's mostly about ML and FL's relationship development and they are both gorgeously looking. In comparison, I wouldn't call "Nothing but thirty" or "All is well" idol drama because one there is a lot more than just ML and FL relationship development. Two they are not that good looking. LOL

Nobody noticed the funny scene when Yu Tu took revenge on his cousin for showing off how popular he is among girls? The cousin first bragged about how quickly girls would reply to his msgs then Yu Tu asked his aunt how the cousin did in finals and then he gave advice of improving score by doing a lot of drills. This is so relatable if you grow up in China. If you don't like a kid, bring his/er scores in the conversation with the parents :D

I personally like those episodes. They show STEM people's dedication, intelligence, pride and humor and most importantly why they (including You Tu's colleagues) are lovable and cute. Unlike a lot of KDramas and other CDramas where ML and FL fall in love for some stupid reason like FL falling from stairs onto ML, these episodes are refreshing and convincing. I especially like the storyline of Guan Zai and his wife. It shows why You Tu wanted to stay out of Jing Jing's life. I also like the fact the ML, depicted as a highly intelligent aerospace engineer does do his job. So many drama's ML doesn't do anything but flirt or chase w FL and yet they are depicted to be the best in their professions. Lastly, it was a big decision from Yu Tu to give up on Jing Jing. So it's only natural that it takes a lot for him to change his mind.

Word of Honor. I think Yang yang is the ceiling of Cdrama's modern look while Wen Kexing (played by Gong Jun) is the ceiling of ancient/wuxia costume look. Both of them are super sexy.

This show actually resonates with a lot of people in STEM field in China who are usually not into this kind of romance drama. One of the reasons is because it stays very close to reality in terms of their work, research life, struggles, etc. Wearing similar styled windbreaker day after day is definitely a very common thing among those people. :)
