Letting Go, and Finding the Right Person
At first, I wasn't completely sure how I felt about the drama because the story takes its time, especially in the early episodes. Xiguang starts out with an unrequited crush on Zhuang Xu, and honestly, watching her spend so much time chasing someone who doesn't give her the same feelings could be frustrating😭. But I think this part is important because her journey isn't simply about finding another man. It's about learning to let go of the person she once thought she wanted and becoming more confident in herself. Once she enters the workplace and meets Lin Yusen, the story gradually becomes more interesting. Yusen is a former surgeon who had to leave medicine after a serious car accident, and I liked that his character isn't just written as the perfect rich male lead. He has his own regrets, emotional baggage, and struggles with his past, especially regarding the accident and the misunderstanding surrounding Xiguang. His relationship with Xiguang develops slowly, and I actually enjoyed that. He doesn't immediately fall into the typical overly possessive or controlling male-lead role. Instead, their relationship grows through small interactions, misunderstandings, support, and gradually learning to trust each other. Xiguang also grows a lot throughout the drama. She starts off somewhat naive and unsure of herself, but watching her become more independent and capable in her career was one of the things I appreciated most. She isn't perfect—sometimes she can be frustrating, especially when she overthinks or doesn't communicate clearly—but she feels like someone who is genuinely growing rather than suddenly becoming a completely different person. I also liked that the drama gives her goals outside of romance. Her career, family, friendships, and personal growth are given room alongside her relationship with Yusen. Xiguang and Yusen have a warm, comfortable chemistry, and their relationship feels more mature than simply relying on dramatic misunderstandings and constant jealousy. Yusen's support also helps Xiguang become more confident rather than making her dependent on him.
That being said, I did feel that the drama was too slow at times😭. With 36 episodes, there are definitely moments where I felt that the story could have moved faster. Some workplace and family conflicts take quite a while to develop and resolve, and not every subplot was equally interesting to me. The story also spends a considerable amount of time dealing with Yusen's past, Xiguang's family problems, misunderstandings, business projects, and other supporting characters. I understand why these parts are there because they contribute to the characters' growth, but sometimes I just wanted the main couple to spend more time together instead of going through another round of family or workplace problems. The second-lead situation with Zhuang Xu also took some patience. I understand that his role is important because he represents Xiguang's first love and the person she needs to let go of, but there were moments when I was basically thinking, “Girl, please move on already. His feelings and his relationship with Xiguang are handled more realistically, and eventually everyone has to accept that sometimes loving someone doesn't mean you are meant to be together. Another thing I appreciated was the family storyline. Xiguang's relationship with her father is complicated, and her father's mistakes and expectations create some genuinely emotional moments. I liked that the drama doesn't make every family member completely evil or toxic. They have their own flaws, regrets, and ways of loving each other, which makes the family conflicts feel more human. Yusen's family is also surprisingly supportive, which was refreshing because I expected the usual rich-family drama where everyone tries to control the male lead's life. Instead, the family relationships are generally more mature and understanding.
One thing that really bothered me, though, was the friendship issue. I believe that as friends, you should be able to trust each other and communicate honestly instead of immediately believing rumors or misunderstandings. What frustrated me was seeing how none of Xi Gua's friends seemed to trust her when the situation with Ye Rong happened. They believed that Xi Gua was the one who had done something wrong behind Ye Rong's back, which ended up damaging Xi Gua's reputation. What made it even worse was that almost everyone took Ye Rong's side without properly listening to Xi Gua or trying to understand her side of the story. Honestly, watching all of that was so embarrassing for me. Like, how can you call yourselves friends if you don't even trust your friend enough to hear her explanation first? I really wished they had communicated better instead of letting one misunderstanding ruin their trust in Xi Gua.
As for the acting, I think Zhao Jinmai and Song Weilong work well together. Zhao Jinmai gives Xiguang a youthful and lively personality while still showing her emotional growth as she becomes more mature. Song Weilong's Yusen is much calmer and more restrained, which works well against Xiguang's brighter personality. Their different personalities create a nice balance. The romance isn't necessarily explosive, but it feels warm and comfortable, and I think that suits the overall tone of the drama. The cinematography and locations are also beautiful, especially the scenes involving the photovoltaic garden and the snowy or travel sequences. The drama has a very polished, warm visual style that makes it easy to watch. For me, Shine on Me is not a masterpiece, and I did get bored in some parts, but it is still a warm and comforting romance with good character development, a healthy-ish relationship, and a satisfying ending. I wouldn't say I loved every episode, but I still enjoyed the journey overall. It may be slow, but once you accept its pace, there's something quite comforting about watching Xiguang and Yusen slowly find their way toward each other—and watching Xiguang finally realize that she doesn't need to chase someone who doesn't choose her.
A little slow, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately sweet and worth finishing.
