Um, can't say much about the novel, but I've watched the donghua (there is a 2nd season over at YOUKU youtube channel going on right now). Liu Xue Yi plays a very handsome and kinda OP monk. His story is very touching and there is a nice the friendship/bromance going on between his and Li Hong Yi and Qi Pei Xin's characters. :)

24 episodes is hardly the first half of the novel, but I can understand the heavy cutting. There is flirting everywhere and they can't pass that to the viewers. I am still eagerly anticipating all the new info surrounding this LA, and hoping for the best :) The times right now are very turbulent for such dramas and we might not even see it in a very very long time, if ever.
