For someone who was that young in 1997, I can tell you he is not over the top. It suits his role perfectly as he is a flamboyant person. He/the costume designer researched Apgujeong boys - the Orange Tribe, and created his wardrobe accordingly. It's also said in the articles.

Excellent script, pace, 90s period setting, emotional immersion, fashion, great unspoken chemistry between the leads, awesome acting by all, and Lee Junho... just wow... He proves once again that he is, without a doubt, one of the best and most versatile actors in SK. Chapeau, my boy. Can't wait to see more of Kim Minha, she's fab.

It might be because most people mainly look for romance or some kind of fantasy, without taking the time - or having the curiosity - to engage with other genres, storytelling, or the quality of acting.

So what? Many "idols" are artists with multiple talents and should pursue them without fear of prejudice. Just look at 2PM actor line: Phenomenal actor Lee Junho - Baeksang winner; Ok Taecyeon in Vincenzo and now in Grand Maison Paris; Hwang Chansung; Nichkhun. All contributing to the project with their unique acting strengths not just standing there looking inanely around like some idol actors admittedly do, not contributing anything to the role.
