Now that I am watching, I agree with most of what you said. I think there had to be some kind of interaction between Mo Xi & Wan JiaGui to contrast the chemistry between her and Chen Wen De. I actually prefer the pairing of JiaGui with the irritating FengYao, though I'd say there isn't much sizzle there.

Hoping for a happy ending - I have about 7 episodes to go. 🤞
