Like i don't really get it. I gave up on anything CH. Bcs of these restrictions , And Now... this? Alas, it still…
Yeah I think it has to do with the fact that they see idol culture in general getting out of control. It really started with the Untamed, like how fans swarmed Xiao Zhan at the airport blocking him and other passangers from boarding their flights. They're also cracking down on idol contest and excessive spending on idols. Considering most idol men are "feminine men", so idol drama is getting extra scrutiny by the government censor, making them make more changes to their productions. From what I've seen, its possible I missed something.
I've found and watched a couple of gay shorts on YouTube, and they're Chinese BL.Past Youth - https://youtu.be/b7SrL65w_6Q…
From what I know, the mainland chinese film & tv industry doesn't have a rating system, just a censor process. This makes the majority of mainland china productions very sanitized with the exception of war movies since I guess they're heavily managed and promoted by the government. This started around 2016. This made pretty much anything even a little sexual just off limits. This has the unfortunate side effect of hitting lgbt content hard. Then there's also the self-censoring hoping that their productions don't get censored.
Body swapping is not anything new concept in BL series. Earlier the Shipper had the similar concept. If they don't…
At least to me, that wouldn't be a bl. Only bc BLs have their own tropes compared to gay tv and film. Also the Shipper is hard to define as a bl with the limited interaction between the bl couple bc of the body swap. But that's only my opinion.
How do these get made in today's China? Even if they do not air, aren't the actors and makers afraid of consequences…
Well its not like they would go to jail or something. I mean Tencent, a chinese company, still has Addicted (the mainland chinese bl) available to watch on their platforms, just not in China (unless you use a vpn which I've seen a lot of people do). And that goes for other BLs too. WeTV for instance, while being a Thai subsidiary, is still owned by Tencent. As for career, the two main actors of Addicted have been in many mainland productions since and have many upcoming. I guess the only thing would be that Addicted was initially shown on the mainland, but this won't be shown at all. So the actors won't get much attention from it on the mainland.
Feb 11th is the official date. I'll be out on Viki and Gagaoolala. The director has been counting from 7 days on their instagram. 5 days left as of this writing.
