FULL Stanley Kwan: I'm currently collaborating with screenwriter Jimmy Ngai on a new project. We both agree that the title should be Lan Yu 2.0. It's another gay love story, but this time featuring middle-aged and older characters.
As we age, we naturally gravitate towards themes of life, aging, illness, and death. For instance, Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien retired due to dementia. We've been discussing the possibility of one of our characters having dementia, mirroring Hou Hsiao-hsien's experience. Despite their enduring relationship, one of the characters is so sick that he can't remember anything.
The script for Lan Yu 2.0 is still a work in progress. I hope Jimmy Ngai can complete it within the agreed-upon timeframe. Once the script meets our standards, we can begin seeking funding.
I've already spoken with Joseph Chang about the project and expressed my desire for him to portray a character with Alzheimer's. He assured me that if he enjoys the script, he'll gladly accept the role, regardless of its theme. If all goes well, we aim to begin pre-production in the latter half of this year and commence filming early next year.
