Yes some people were vocal in saying they downrated TTEOTM because the ending is not a definitive HE. On hindsight, the series ended as it should, BUT a special HE episode would have pleased majority of the viewers. That's the production's missed opportunity.
There are many BL fans, aren't there? The novel was spicy and in the drama adaptation, it helped that they chose two goodlooking guys to play the leads. For me, it was a storytelling mess until a third of the way through but it got better and more fascinating as the drama progressed.

The universe decided it was not yet time for XXC to succeed. Otherwise, how can he have gone back again for the closure with his dad, appreciation for MXL's surviving in the Dark Abyss and the tree story being tied in? If he had succeeded even at second try, he wouldn't have gone back to the time when he was actually da gege and caused MXL to want to live and eventually meeting XXC. These are all the intricate small changes that will cause XXC to have many emotional realizations to make him grow as a person and also fall even deeper in love with MXL. The universe (*cough screenwriters cough*) has spoken so we will just watch and see how it plays out. 😁✌️❤️
Obvious haters have already downrated all the episodes even those that are not yet released from ep.29-40. 🤦♀️
Of course, the quality of the show is not reflected on the rating but some viewers look at the rating first and skip those they think are too low. XXC coming back from the Dark Abyss saw there were lights in his palace (it should be empty and dark since he was in seclusion on that cliff) so he went to check it out. He saw his father with his neatly folded clothes on the bed. This is like a waiting for your return home gesture. He finally understood his father's love and concern for him. He just bowed because he can't interfere with events even knowing his father will die in this timeline. A glasslooking Yuanling seed fell from his clothes into his courtyard where it eventually grew into a tree. This was the tree MXL was surprised to see in Snow City coz it usually only grows in the Dark Abyss. She loved going up that tree when she was a Snow City disciple.

With XXC fainting, it was a soul intrusion but not by ZM as initially implied. It was actually XXC time traveling again and again in an attempt to save Ling-er despite the risk of his soul being shattered forever. 😭😭😭
No wonder in the previous scenes he had these outburst of emotions and knowledge every time he had/is having a soul intrusion. It's because he has already lived through it.
So many emotions finally flashing through XXC's face. The realizations of what MXL went through and the events he unfolding before his eyes are affecting him so much. It was also good that XXC got closure with his dad when he saw how much he actually cared like MXL said. 🥲
For the funny bit, he finally knows that he is da gege. Haha! Way to go in being jealous of yourself. 😂 The young MXL shows such an irressible spirit despite all the difficulties and abuse she experienced. No wonder XXC wanted to pamper her.
Sometimes, it is really hard to explain time travel visually without confusing the viewers but I think that even if one hasn't read the novel, the drama has laid enough clues and foreshadowing to follow. Very masterfully handled! 👏👏👏 Ep.29-30 next! 💕
