I'm halfway through this season and it's disappointing me in a way I'm finding hard to articulate at the moment.…
1. This isn't just a WHC2 problem, it's a TV/Movie problem in general: STOP HIRING ACTORS TO PLAY TEENAGERS WHEN THEY LOOK LIKE ADULTS!!!!!!! It is genuinely so distracting. How am I supposed to believe these mfrs are in HS when they look like they're pushing 30. It's so unfortunate. [VERY LIGHT SPOILER] The middle schoolers in the show actually look like middle schoolers but when compared to Baku, they look like elementary students. [/END SPOILER] 2. They did Lee Jun Young dirty in the title sequence. The lighting makes his makeup look so bad compared to his neck and ear 3. Directing choice? Actors choice? Characterization in general? I really disliked Ryeo Un's acting as Baku (Park Hu Min). Maybe I'm misinterpreting his character (which I'm hoping is the case) but his acting felt too much like acting. Does that even make sense? I couldn't tell if Baku was always over the top because he's putting on a facade or if the actor himself is trying and failing at playing an over the top character. I will say his serious moments after ep 5 and so on are great. The happy-go-lucky personality and the way Baku speaks is what generally throws me off (I think). 4. What is up with this season and the odd tone switches? The comedy aspect felt so random and it definitely had a good moment or two but then it got old and confusing? What is the mood we're going for here? It's a complete switch from WHC1. It's almost like whiplash. We went from light-hearted banter between soon to be friends/friends in season 1 to very obviously scripted to be comedic moments in season 2 and it ruins the atmosphere of the show a bit? I haven't read the webtoon but, as far as I know, WHC1 was nothing like it and I feel like WHC2 was trying to at least incorporate some of the webtoon into the series? It's like, if you're going to create a whole season not sticking to the webtoon then continue to do that in the future as well. The shift is just jarring imo. Just look at EP6 13:21-13:35 – Why does this drag on for so long!? I just don't understand lmaooooooo.
I'm halfway through this season and it's disappointing me in a way I'm finding hard to articulate at the moment. I have a couple ideas why but I'm going to hold my tongue until I finish. I just had to get this off my chest lol because I'm so bothered right now.
