This story shouldn't be viewed merely as a love story. In reality, it is a systemic critique of a society shifting toward self-centeredness and of hypergamy.
There are two fundamental pillars in the story:
Tiexicheng: It’s not just a factory; it is a symbol of innocence, childhood, idealism, and the sense of 'us.' Shanghai: The symbol of individualism, money, ambition, and the sense of 'self.' Xiao Man is like this factory: old, wounded, unable to keep up with the modern world, but someone who still possesses a 'soul.' He is the most honorable character in the story. Xiaodan and Xia Lei, on the other hand, are two people who left that factory and adapted to the city, but left their innocence behind in those ruins.
In my opinion, the story will end with Xiao Man and Chunchun being together, because both characters belong to the same world. As for Xia Lei, he will likely end up with either Xiaodan or Meng Ge. Personally, I think ending up with Meng Ge would be far more honorable than being with the lover of someone you call a 'brother.'
I believe Xiaodan is one of the most selfish characters in the story. She didn't act out of a 'let him survive without me rather than be happy with me' mindset. That was just a mask. The fundamental reason she ended the relationship was simply 'to escape her own guilty conscience.' When she told Xiao Man to 'catch up to me,' she actually meant 'rise to my class, my status.' This was not a request born of pure love; it was an ultimatum.
In Chinese dramas, it is common for the first 4-5 episodes to be released at the beginning of the broadcast. The first 1-2 episodes are available to all users, while the remaining episodes are exclusive to VIP users. Afterward, regular users can access 1-2 new episodes per day in sequence. As the series approaches its finale, the remaining 4-5 episodes are typically released all at once; these episodes are offered exclusively to VIP users as early access (express episodes).
I absolutely loved her performance in TDHR. I really hope the directors notice her too. She truly deserves to be seen in bigger productions as a main lead actress!
