I think he was feeling guilty that he was never there with her when she needed him the most... He use to avoid grandma for many years because of misunderstanding and now when he was finally able to spend time with her, she passed away.
As someone with a remotely similar mother, I find the mom in this show hella annoying, everytime she comes on…
Even my mother sometimes behave like her... Especially at the part where she blackmails her daughter about taking care of her... This is the reason why am I able to relate with this drama... It's not irritating to me.

It's because of 3 reasons 1. People are thinking that it is a romance drama, but it is not... It's mostly a female centric family drama. Romance is secondary here.
2. People are not liking FL's mother and FL's ex boyfriend.
3. Yang Zi and Xu Kai have huge haters who are creating new and new accounts just to make it bad.
Even he told her that she is not good enough to run the hotel... Plus he was also not telling her why does he want the hotel so much... She doesn't trust him at all, so do you expect her to simply accept his advice? Try to understand her perspective as well... She doesn't like when someone lies... Keeping someone in dark and lying are equal things... She can understand that there must be a big reason why grandma didn't left the hotel to YZM... She only wanted to know the reason but he chose to go around with his words...
It's good that he didn't get the hotel because it would have gone in the hand of that wolf lady.
Then I think you didn't watch the drama properly... He did had a change of heart but in other way... ML would have sold the hotel to that Female Wolf and got his position in headquarters, then he would have proposed FL the next and would have gotten her a better job... This was actually the plan of ML... He had already decided it in previous episodes... But everything didn't go that way so he back again trying to convince her to swap properties with him.
