I don't think people here gives him excuse though, but his background gives people more ground to understand him…
Would it be better if Do San did everythingJP wanted? Act as exactly like the guy in the letter? The lie would be worse who would to be blamed for that? Isn't it better that he wants to be himself around DM rather than fully someone else? Remember Grandma wants the lie to be kept the most. She asked DS to keep the lie. Even if he goes against JP can he go against grandma?

And that's his flaw. He's using someone for his lie and that's no better. Isn't it he who wanted along with Grandma to have DS lie?. Is JP himself okay with the truth being revealed? remember the letters were not all him. DM is falling for the real DS and he can't blame DS for that.

The writer wants to show him away from his Living Buddha Persona. Also no one is perfect or should have to be. That's why the point about him becoming ambitious. Also Do San before was a pushover which is not really a good thing for him now he's thinking of himself too. There is nothing wrong with being ambitious as long as you don't step on others to get what you want or look down on others. I want his lies to come out early though.
If that's the case, neither of them should end up with SDM then. And we should all be angry if SDM chooses either…
Not really that ignores all nuance after all if the character grows that would be better for them and their relationship. JP is too late he hasn't even come to terms with his feelings yet but that doesn't mean his growth is not important. Also remember I said it's dalmi's choice in the end.
Agreed, all characters have flaws that's what makes them interesting, sometimes they act wrong and they need to…
Oh JP has flaws infact he's the most flawed character here. I actually understand people's sentiments. They don't want the character's development to be ignored in favour of the main lead. They don't want a complex character like him to go to a waste and I don't either. But character development means overcoming said flaws. His backstory can't be always used as a get out of jail free card. And with him and In Jae both the characters have depth and need to grow. Infact if we have to be worried it's for In Jae cause 2nd female characters tend to get the least growth. Hell even the FLs development might be ignored for the second male lead. The audience and the writers are both at fault for this tbh. I think with this writer though she is trying. We'll see.
I don't agree with people excusing Ji Pyung or any character's actions by using their background/backstory as an excuse for their behaviour. Everytime he does something wrong people always make excuses. He is like that because... He is not wrong because... But the thing is all the main characters can be excused that way to various degrees. While thinking about either of these characters we must not forget that their actions affect other people too and it's not fair on them. It's one thing to use their backstory as a means to understand them are where they are coming from but it's totally different to use that to excuse their actions. Everytime I make any comparisons I am being told that it's different the reasons are different but the thing is what the characters are doing are not that different their background doesn't excuse them. Say if I were a certain kind of person whose life has been very hard (no I have lived a totally fine life mostly) Would my life and the problems I have excuse everything I do? Would you just ignore when I say or do very something wrong and hurt you? You might cut me some slack but will it be okay if I continue doing wrong and use excuses?
Ok so my problem has never been people prefer any of the leads over the other but that their reasons for hating one is eh. But the comment below me is right. I think all are flawed and not one dimensional. I think there is nuances to the characters.
I am team DS for him as a person but when it comes to the ships I'd rather side with the girl. They are always the ones last who matters in love triangles as these because they are always ignored in favor of the male leads. Notice it's not I like them for each other but that he deserves her? It's high time drama writers stop writing love triangles.
