"fluffy rom-com dressed up as a Saeguk" - Yes! A "Rom-com/Melo-drama in a Seaguk setting - KDrama version of a fairy tale - and I loved it! And yes, not nearly as great as heavily written Seaguks - because that was not the drama's goal in the first place - and so no comparison needed. AndI enjoyed it! "Her character is neither particularly brave, nor very strong or intelligent" - exactly! she just happened to be someone a prince felt comfortable being with, whose words yet not so smart and are just natural and sincere, made a sound to a soon to be king's ears. I find it sweet!
I dislike some popular dramas too, but I suggest you judge base on Genre; so you can enjoy a drama's charm even if it not as brillianlty written as the other once. As per MLFTS kim soo hyun and Ji Hyun's charcter and acting, their conversations, the condo;s atmosphere are enough to love the drama so much. There are dramas that would teach you a lot of life's lesson, drama's that would make you think,and there is MLFTS :)
