I saw them both but in my case I saw Maou first and I like to think that The Devil was a longer more explicit version (even a little dragging because it could've ended in 12/13 episodes max) but then again, Maou isn't the best example for Japanese twisted stories, there are better dramas than that.

I am watching some currently airing dramas and I started Itazura Na Kiss 2013, it's much better than the old version. What about you? Only watching IRIS 2?

Yes, that's true, JDramas don't tend to complicate things like in KDramas plus the length of episodes can play a major part in that.
I don't hate JDramas romantic stories but I prefer twisted stories instead beacuse Japan's drama industry is so good at making them.
