"Hia" is used by Thais of Chinese descent to refer to a male person of about the same generation who is older than you. It's different from the "hia" which means "asshole" because of the tone you say it. Thai is a tonal language, so the meaning changes according to the tone of the word you say it.
they better stop being racist/eurocentric and hire some half black people into roles next season. Thats all i…
I'm Asian. Living as a neighbor to Thailand. So I get much more say than you do.
The standard of beauty in Thailand, and the rest of the other Southeast Asian countries , is that fairer skinned people are considered more beautiful. Simply because historically fairer skinned people are the richer and more affluent group of people. Since they have more money they didn't have to bother with the daily labor. They hired other people to do these daily work. These people who did the majority of the work were in the hot humid sun for a long time, so their skins got darker.
So when entertainment was needed, they hired people whose jobs were to entertain. These entertainers didn't need to be under the sun. So their skins didn't get dark like the others who did farming and trading and stuff.
It's still true in Thailand. People in offices are considerably fairer than those who worked in agriculture or traded in commodities.
I'm not saying it's right, but neither am I saying it's wrong. It is what it is. Not all Thais are equally the same color. Those with Chinese or East Asian heritage look a lot more Chinese than those who have not.
But it's wrong for you to say that there's racism in choosing people with mixed heritage to portray characters who have fair skin in fiction. You need to remember that there was an audition where a few hundred people took part in, and they chose those which fit the characters the most.
I just think it's wrong for you to proclaim racism when you don't understand the social dynamics of a totally different culture from yours. It smacks of neocolonialism.
And as a Southeast Asian myself who's not very fair, I don't see the problem. We Southeast Asian are much less racist than you people in the West. Don't ever forget that it was you guys who came over and took over our lands and raped us of our natural resources and left us for dead when the Japanese came. You guys did nothing to save us until Pearl Harbor. I had family members never coming home.
So maybe you just shut your trap about whatever racism you think you see. Stop hypercorrecting other people. We are happy now. Stop making us miserable with your racism.
