I think it is actually implied that they keep in touching during the scooter scene because in the after credits ending she is 17 when they are celebrating his birthday but they show a sense of intimacy of closeness(i am choosing to ignore the age V_V) . But I agree the ending they keep is more gently on the soul T~T
This is just my take but the story itself feels like it about the ones who get left behind, all three(four with CYR) main characters are all separated at some point through the means of both time and death. I think this is why although I liked the ending where it happily ever after and everything, I think had it had ended where HYX isn’t able to stop CYR death is in my eyes the most thematically impactful storytelling wise.

It a bit of a slow burn on one side for a while, the romance truly begins around ep 10 and it starts off one-side but it slowly builds to mutual. TRUST ME IT WORTH THE WAIT THEY ARE SO FREAKING ADORABLE!
In the books he recognizes her from the battle scene with the northern lord, but the show took it a different way by him realizing it was her when she ate the apple, said his eyes was like stars, and finally the battle scene was just confirming what he already knew.
