I agree with you regarding the subs. I’ve rewatched with Viet subs and have to say that the English subs don’t do justice to the dialogue and subtleties in context, which is a real pity.

I think it could be The Painted Veil, same book he takes off the shelf in ep 3 as well as what he had on his bookshelf in ep 24.
