Finally I'll have my daily "dinnertime drama"! Demi-gods and semi-devils is JY's best written work, in my opinion. The Condor Heroes trilogy is most popularized but DGDS is the best written work.
Overall, it's a good drama....but I have ONE complain....Ms Writer, WHY WHY WHY you revived everyone, including the fire qilin Hong Ri, the second Heavenly prince and the FL's student Gu Jun BUT you didn't revive Yue Mi????? I would love to see a happy ending for Tian Qi and Yue Mi but alas, the writer revived everyone BUT Yue Mi, the FL's best friend! Sigh....I feel bad for Tian Qi and for Yue Mi. They helped the OTP so much and were such nice people but they got the short end of the stick. :(
Be prepared for the people who will come to call you a hater for saying this but I feel the *exact* same way.…
Yes, GigiBear, I agree. To those who calls others "haters":- Why call a person a hater when it is merely criticism? If an actress or actor or anyone working in any profession can't take criticism, then there will be no room for improvement. I do not hate the FL because I don't know her. You need to know someone in order to hate or love them, don't you agree? Like my son expressed and to a certain degree I agreed with him, it was the character in this drama that the FL portrayed. It really leaves little room for true acting performance. So please, people, do not jump into calling ppl haters simply because they have a different opinion than yours. In any case, I do enjoyed this drama to a certain degree - not because of the OTP - but because of the team spirit and CGI battle scenes.
The parts I enjoyed the most in this drama are the CGI battle scenes. The parts I disliked the most in this drama are scenes concerning the OTP; which is rather shocking considering this is supposed to be a romance drama. I truly ended up fast forwarding most scenes in the drama to get to the battle scenes! Chemistry between OPT is zero to me. Mostly because of the expressionless look on the FL's face 90% of the time. It's like her face is made of plastic.... it doesn't show much expression. Just large eyes, oval shaped face, cute meaty cheeks; a standard look for petite kawaii beauty. When I expressed my frustration at the FL's lack of expressions, my son commented that maybe it's the character she portrays? Maybe she's supposed to be this classic tsundere female gamer character, so her face froze? In any case, the lack of expressions on the FL's face significantly impacted on my perception of the supposed passion between the OTP. Even the kissing scenes felt perfunctory. In any case, watch it for the CGI battle scenes.
The Bahasa Indonesia's summary makes more sense and contains lots of spoilers. Basically this is another standard melodrama romance: ML loved a girl since young but unfortunately got married to her step-sister (FL) because she (FL) saved his life during an earthquake. ML and FL got married but divorced. She got pregnant with his child but lost his child. ML was devastated from the loss of his child and left the FL. At the same time, his father was plotting to take over his birth mother's business while the FL's step sister is doing all sorts to split the OTP apart. After he left the FL, he realised his mistake and went searching for her. At the same time, he destroyed the business of others for the sake of his father's ambitions. While searching for the FL, he was told that she had passed away. He didn't believe that she's dead and crazily went searching for her. Finally, they meet again overseas but everything has changed. How can they get back together again?
It would be better if I have the original Mandarin synopsis. I can translate direct from Mandarin to English. The Bahasa Indonesia's synopsis is a bit messy but definitely makes more sense than the English synopsis!

Michelle Chen was a poor Xiao Long Nu. I don't blame her, she had to match the ethereal beauty Liu Yi Fei and…
They were not the first LOCH couple to marry from acting in LOCH. There's a belief in the industry that if you want to get married, then act in LOCH as Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu. Hence so many jokes about YG-XLN pairing. Does that mean the next LOCH couple to marry will be Thomas Tong and Mao Xiao Hui? Let's see if the "curse" holds true since this is the first LOCH after Jing Yong's death.
It's raining kisses. Literally, there will be kisses in every episode! The frequency of kisses take the joy out of watching the OTP kiss. I suppose this pair is so familiar with each other now, they are ok with kissing with every few sentences or so.
Not much of a story. Mediocre acting, except for the 2nd ML & 2nd FL. Watch this on fast forward and only on days when you ran out of something better to watch.
Characterization is lacking, causing the characters to have a rather one dimensional feeling. ML has minimal facial expressions with heavy reliance on CGI. Hence most times, he just needed to stand there and look good while the CGI does most of the job for him. FL is stuck in the typical cute and somewhat oblivious damsel-in-distress role. Besides the main OTP and the 2nd OTP; there is little to no expansion of story for each lifetimes. Fair warning:- this is a very lead- centric drama. The writer did not bother to expand on the stories of others, e.g., parents, siblings, political situations etc. Maybe this is due to the relatively brief length of a drama of this genre. It has only 36 eps but need to cover 3 lifetimes of trials. Hence, things are rushed. Side characters and events are like backgrounds as if their three lifetimes counted for nothing. On top of that, I am less convinced of the romance between the main leads - the chemistry is lacking. Instead, I am more interested in the romance between the 2nd ML + 2nd FL. For dramas this genre, it is important that the leads have an amazing chemistry and love story to convince the viewers of their great love that can last for 3 lifetimes of trials. To me, it felt more like a high school crush that probably won't last past a year or two.
Sounds like the less popular version of "You are my Glory" which is slotted to air later starring Yang Yang and Dilraba. Same set up - famous female artist and nerdy science-related bloke. Looks like in the next couple years or so, there might be a mushrooming of CDramas featuring idol and non-idol romance. CDramas always have this seasonal cycle of stories with similar storyline/genre or characters.
Definitely worth the watch. If JoL is 10/10, then this one here is a close 9/10. The one mark less is because there's less martial arts action (to those who likes more action in their dramas) and because of the lesser first-impression impact than JoL. This drama requires a few episodes to "warm up" and once it does, it doesn't disappoint. I personally like my ML character to be good at both intellect and martial prowess (文武双全), and that's just personal preference. If you do not mind a ML who is mostly intellect-based, then you will probably consider this drama as good as JoL. However, the story, plots, comedy and characters are as good as JoL and is equally addictive. Can't wait for Season 2!
It's an ok drama but not amazing. Acting is top notch but I dislike how ZZY depicted the FL. A'Wu in the novel is definitely more active and decisive than how ZZY depicted her in this drama. ZZY made A'Wu's character into a rather passive, soft-spoken and indecisive woman who was able to survive because of luck. Because of her lackluster depiction of A'Wu, I don't buy how all the blokes went head over heels for her and did all sorts of unspeakable things just to possess her, e.g. Zi Dan, General Song. I'd always loved reverse harems and the notion of many guys going after one woman, but that woman has to be worthy and outstanding. ZZY's A'Wu is not an outstanding character, hence the whole premise of men falling for her left, right and corner did not work for me. Add to it some unnecessary scenes which are obvious efforts to prolong the drama and make story where there's no story to tell - this drama is simply passable. It is just one out of many ancient-palace-politics dramas that once you'd watched it, there's no more need to re-watch it.
In the first few episodes, I found it hard to watch the ML and FL as a couple because they were siblings in JoL. However, after a while, I accepted that they are in a romantic relationship now. I just thought the director could have casted a different pairing as it would be somewhat awkward to see them as siblings again in JoL 2. The ML may be the husband in this drama, but his character in this drama echoes many characteristics of his role as Fan Xian's younger brother in JoL in that he's quirky, quick and funny with his words, very good with calculations and very finance/money-minded. That said, I like the ML and FL's acting. This drama gives off a similar vibe as JoL. Quirky characters set in a serious background of business, familial competition and politics. It has a rather down-to-earth feel to it with the occasional comedic relief that was not over the top. So far, this is a worthy drama to watch on the interim while we wait with abated breath for JoL 2 to air.
Sweet romance. My only comment is....FL's neck and ML's back must hurt a lot considering the many kissing scenes and the significant height disparity between them.
Ahh should I watch ep by ep or wait till the weekend and binge watch the weeks episodes hard decision 1 ep x day…
I originally planned to wait it out till all the eps are out and binge it but gave in to the temptation and started watching it. Binged 21 episodes in 3 days and now that I had caught up with the current episode, I am starting to regret starting this before all of the eps are out because the wait for new eps is agonizing!
Does anyone know if they are dubbing themselves? Or have voice actors? ZZY constant whispering is on my nerves.
ZZY voice has always been "whispy" even when she's playing the role of a wuxia heroine. That's definitely her voice. I think only HK and Taiwanese actresses and actors have their voices dubbed so that the characters speak "accurate Mandarin" aka mainland China accent. Mainland Chinese actors and actresses are using their original voices.
