I definitely think the childhood friendship was part of it, but to me, it seems like the part where he really wavered at the end was when the ML Talked about being able to live his life on his own terms. It seemed like the friendship, love, and desire to play piano all influenced his decision.

I agree that it stuck out, but I have to disagree a little on it not being necessary. I feel like it helps explain why he wavered a few times at the end with killing the ML.
