Turns out the tree is indeed genetically modified to generate spirit energy and it's linked to a specific person to provide them immortality and powers.
But the actual act of absorbing spirit energy could be linked to mentality. Or in drama language: love.
The more ML feels love and excitement, the more energy he can absorb.
They sort of imply FL may be a reincarnation of an Ancient Person but it's not clear...

He didn't really do anything. His violence and personality stemmed from mental issues caused by his father. He was peeking in on his father's messages with the murderer and then later took the fall but he himself didn't really do anything bad if I recall...

Execution could've definitely been better tho.
Kinda like in goblin but I believe in goblin ppl are bound to only have a limit of 4 reincarnations or something... so this is a bit better
