Height standards for men vs women in the entertainment industry in Asia is different. To be a male lead nowadays (cdrama, kdrama) no matter how handsome you are, you have to be at least 180 cm or 5’9”. Otherwise, you are the cute sidekick or 2ML. It’s the opposite for female leads. Being petite has its advantages and perpetuates ‘fragility’ or ‘cuteness’. If you are tall, unless you get to have a ML at least 4-5 inches taller than you, you have limited roles (warriors, models, etc). How many movies or shows would you have the FL taller than the ML in Asia excluding comedies? I don’t see a Zendaya/Tom Holland scenario happening.

To best enjoy any show especially fantasy storylines, best leave logic out the door. 🤣. From what I have observed in most if not all Asian historical, Wuxia, anime adapted dramas, gender is acknowledged thru hair style and/or clothing. If that is legit or not, well, let’s just enjoy the show.

Qi Yan Di is not an imitation of Zhao Lusi. If you are familiar with the 2 ladies’ body of work, the roles they portray are very different. QYD will not fit the mold of ZL, their body types are not even the same. QYD is tall at 5’7”while ZL is 5’3”. In role casting, height is a major consideration both in casting other actors in the show and the script itself. QYD’s built is not typical Asian and especially if it were historical c-drama, hers will stand out. So that is why QYD fits modern drama standards more. Let’s do everyone a favor, and appreciate the actresses’ unique abilities and not tag them as shadows of anyone. ✌️
