**Spring of the Blade — 7.5/10**

*Spring of the Blade* had a lot of potential. The story had strong ingredients: a childhood bond, a long-awaited reunion, revenge, political intrigue, and a male lead who is genuinely intelligent and capable. Unfortunately, I felt that the script did not make the best use of those ingredients, especially in the second half.

**Shen Run (the male lead) was easily my favorite part of the drama.** I would give him around 9/10 as a character. He is smart, observant, and usually thinks several steps ahead. He understands people and political situations very well, and I often enjoyed watching him figure out what was really happening behind the scenes. His aura as the male lead also worked very well for me.

I would even put Shen Run on roughly the same level as **Xiao Huaiyong from *Blossoms of Power***. They are both the type of male leads who feel genuinely competent rather than simply being described by the script as “smart.”

My biggest problem was **Xie Qingyuan, the female lead**. I don't think she is a badly written character from the beginning. In fact, she initially appears intelligent, capable, and determined. However, as the story progresses, her stubbornness and obsession with revenge begin to override the intelligence that the story initially established.

The biggest example is her decision to marry Li Congxin in order to use his family's power for revenge, despite already having feelings for Shen Run. I could understand the strategic motivation, but emotionally and logically, this decision was very difficult for me to accept. It created a lot of unnecessary drama and forced Shen Run to clean up the consequences of choices that he had already warned her about.

Another problem was that the drama did not give Qingyuan enough emotional reflection afterward. **I really wanted to see her feel regret or guilt for the things her choices caused, especially toward Shen Run.** She was shown to love him, but I rarely felt that the drama actually showed *how deeply* she loved him.

For example, once she learned that Yan Rui was actually Shen Run, I expected the story to explore the emotional impact of that revelation much more. The drama had already established that she had been waiting for Shen Run for years. That could have been developed into something incredibly romantic: realizing that the person she had been waiting for all those years had actually returned to her.

Even the jade that Shen Run gave her could have been used much more effectively. After learning its importance, Qingyuan could have reflected on how Shen Run had risked his life protecting her and finally apologized for making him suffer because of her choices. A simple scene of her sincerely saying “I'm sorry” could have added a lot of depth to their relationship.

I also wish the drama had included a scene after their marriage where Shen Run asked her something like:

**“After everything I have done, do you regret marrying me?”**

I would have loved to see Qingyuan's reaction before she answered. That kind of emotional scene would have meant much more to me than simply adding more kissing scenes. The drama had the foundation for a very touching love story, but it often chose plot progression over emotional development.

**The romance was therefore a mixed experience for me.** I believed that Shen Run and Qingyuan loved each other, but I did not always *feel* Qingyuan's love as strongly as I felt Shen Run's love for her. For a couple whose relationship was built around childhood memories, separation, waiting, and reunion, I think the emotional side of their relationship deserved much more attention.

Li Congxin was another issue for me. I understand why the character exists, but I felt that the script pushed his romantic pursuit too far. Compared with Zhao Xiao from *Rebirth for You*, who could also be annoying at times, Li Congxin felt much less natural to me. Zhao Xiao still had manners, boundaries, and common sense in how he expressed his feelings. Li Congxin often felt as if the script was repeatedly telling the audience, “Look how much he loves her,” rather than letting his feelings develop naturally through his behavior.

The **second half also became increasingly scattered**. From around the later episodes, the story divided its attention between Shen Run's political/revenge storyline and Qingyuan's investigation into her family and mother's past. Shen Run remained important, but I felt that the male and female leads should have been working together much more. The drama had a much stronger potential as a husband-and-wife team solving the problems together.

This is especially frustrating because the drama had such a strong male lead. I wanted to see Shen Run and Qingyuan use their abilities together rather than having the narrative separate them for long stretches.

Overall, I don't think *Spring of the Blade* was a bad drama. **It was a drama with good ingredients that were not always assembled into the strongest possible story.** The early and middle parts worked fairly well for me, and Shen Run was an excellent character. But the later pacing, the unnecessary second-lead drama, Qingyuan's questionable revenge decisions, and the lack of emotional reflection from her prevented the drama from reaching its full potential.

**My final ratings:**

* Male Lead — **9/10**
* Female Lead — **5/10**
* Main Couple Romance — **6/10**
* Overall Plot — **6/10**
* Li Congxin — **3/10**
* Overall Drama — **7.5/10**

There was a much better drama hiding inside *Spring of the Blade*. I just wish the script had trusted its strongest ingredients more—especially the childhood bond and the relationship between Shen Run and Qingyuan.
