I agree with u. The separation and angst was needed. Imagine if Pete hadn't left he would have always felt guilty for betraying the main family. Also he hadn't realized his feelings at that point. Which brings me to an another theory I have. I think that Pete only totally accepted that he loved Vegas when Vegas told him, 'You can't shoot me and you know why'. The way Pete broke down?? I really think it all hit him like a truck.
On the other hand the separation was necessary for Vegas too. Otherwise he could have continued to treat Pete like that only.
