Truly beautiful
This was absolutely incredible. I can't say enough good things about this show. I have just two complaints before I get into everything, I loved about it.
1. They should've hugged at the end. It would've made it the perfect ending.
2. The fact it was labeled a bromance instead of a BL. I know the whole thing behind Korea's censorship and everything which is why I only subtracted half a point from the final score, but I think they need to just get over it and let BL's with big actors happen.
Now onto all the positives!
The cinematography, the music, the lighting, and editing in this show were incredible. This show was so visually beautiful to look at. I loved all the sets and scenery so much. They were stunning!
The details. With Korea's censorship they weren't able to label it as a BL so they had to be clever with it and they were. I'll get more into the boys themselves soon, but what I am talking about is the little things that subtly told us they were in love. It was all done so well. For example, the place they reunited in the finale, gay marriage is legal and they reunited in a church with a song that is typically used for marriage. There were many other things like this as well but that's just one example and I loved it.
The acting from everyone was absolutely incredible. There are quite a few well-known actors in this, and they all did such an amazing job. I think this was such a beautiful show for Song Kang to come back with after his military service and for Lee Jun Young to leave with before his service (I don't know if he has more that are coming out while he is gone).
The story was beautiful and heartbreaking all in one. I was very shocked it didn't end in sad way and actually had a happy ending. The story takes place over so many years, and I loved seeing how everyone changed over the years. I think they did a great job at telling it. It was a long show with long episodes and for not a lot of crazy things or a lot of action or anything like that, I think it was well paces and it was never boring. I thought it was really amazing how they did it in a way that kept you engaged the whole time.
Characters:
Pi O and Jeong Yo...I loved them both so much. I'm going to miss seeing them every week. First off, I love them both as actors so much and was so thrilled to see them in something together. They are both so incredible and their chemistry was off the charts. I need to see them in something together again in the future. I loved seeing all the changes their relationship went through over the years. It had so many changes from childhood to teen to adult and it was so cool to see how they were always a big part of each other's lives in one way or another. They loved each other so deeply and it was so beautiful to see. The looks they'd give each other, the subtle touches, and the care they had for each other...I loved it.
I think Pi O was pretty misunderstood as a character for the most part. He was severely depressed until Jeong Yo came into his life and when he was ripped away from it destroyed him and we saw that. Pi O spent half his life looking for Jeong Yo...that is love and dedication. He showed his depression in a way that's not often showed in media, and I think that's why a lot of people thought he was different than he was. He wasn't a cruel person like people made him out to be at all. He was someone who was depressed and under a lot of stress and pressure and just had a different way of expressing it.
Jeong Yo went through so much throughout this show. He was also someone who was depressed and very stressed and found a light in Pi O. His confession to Pi O when they played piano one last time together was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my entire life. Him possibly giving up feeling in hand to play with Pi O one last time...again just the dedication and love is so strong. Even when he was filled with rage toward Pi O, you could see there was love still buried inside.
I loved both of them so much and love that they do end up together. They are truly fated to be together.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Jae In to be honest. I really don't like how her and Pi O got together. She took advantage of him while he was feeling lost and weak and that made me really hate her. I liked her when they were in high school but as the show went on, I started to care for her less and less and the moment of her and Pi O in the bedroom where they got together made me really not like her at all.
Hyeon Su was just okay to me. He clearly favored Jeong Yo from the beginning, and I feel like he thought very little of Pi O until a lot later in life. I also thought his relationship with Ji Hye was kind of odd. I just felt very neutral about him overall.
I hated Ji Hye from the moment she showed up and that never changed. If anything, my hatred for her just grew stronger as it went on. She was selfish and didn't care Pi O's mental wellbeing the entire time and then of course she's the cause of what happened to Jeong Yo too. If Pi O didn't publicly take the blame for what happened to him, she never would've come clean either. I just hated her and loved seeing her get thrown in jail.
Seung Un and Seon Ju were not the best. I knew Seung Un was being hard on Pi O for a reason, I just think he obviously could've approached it better. I'm glad he apologized in the end, but it doesn't make up for what he did. I didn't care for Seon Ju too much either because it always rubbed me the wrong way that she cared more for Jeong Yo than she did for her own grandson. To me it felt like it wasn't just talent based either, she just seemed to not care for Pi O at all and I didn't like that.
Overall, this show was truly beautiful and am so glad it was as popular as it was. These slower paced shows don't always do well, and I am so beyond happy that this one did. I truly recommend this! I loved every moment of it!
