It seems like it was mentioned as more of a courtesy or "way out" by the artist so that he wasn't outright accusing the production team of theft/plagarism. I think the artist was trying to show grace when in actuality, the production team should have done their due diligence. It looks like they heavily relied on one resource. Its like a term paper, who would cite one resource? The "middleman" is an imaginary scapegoat.
