Actually I have a friend who has toxic parents... Every time they argues, her mom will said how she was ungrateful that she let her be alive, and how she owed her breastfeed etc.. This kind of mental torture exist, and my friend actually diagnose for depression because of her family coercion. The only way to handle this is by staying away from your family, and sometimes other people misjudge her as unfilial when she choose not to go back for religion or national holiday.. And believe me when I said that actually children like this are grooming by their parents since kids that she/he can't say no or argue without feeling bad about themselves..

the original problems lie in the novel they adapted. It is not that they suddenly make a new plot to increase angst and make ML FL suffered more. They even suffered more in the original novel. So, we really should blame the author lol.
