Overrated in comparison to which show, exactly? I’ve been watching BL shows since last year and this one blew…
Oh yeah it really is dependent on the consumer so yeah I understand your point. For me I think it's natural as I really do have friends that constantly references zodiac signs in our daily conversations. But I also see why it may seem performative in that aspect. <3.

Two things about this ep:

1.) I love how we saw more of Vlad in this episode. We saw more of who he is, his sadness, his longing for someone to understand him. The way how his feelings for Karl was revealed was ugh *chef's kiss*. The theme song test made me so sad because while it did confirm his attraction to Karl, the fact that it happened in his moments of sadness struck me :<.

2.) I loved the scene where Karl surprised Vlad for his birthday :<. UGH people were probably confused if it's a dream sequence but given the driver license shot, I'm pretty sure that it isn't and that really happened and Karl REALLY SURPRISED Vlad for his birthday. UGH I CANT IM SO SOFT.

Episode 5 would probably be a turning point for the story. We are to see this lead to plot development and increased character development. I'm so excited for next week :< <3.

How can people hate Judit? I never found her to be rude or abusive. Any LGBT person would want a sister like her!
I mean true, who wouldn't want to have a sister that's openly supportive of her gay brother? But the thing is, she overstepped and has crossed unspoken boundaries. Here are the instances:

1.) She immediately assumed Karl's sexuality without giving him the chance to explain. In ep. 1, we see her shushing Karl as he was trying to speak of the situation but he failed as Judit didn't let him speak for himself.

2.) Her overbearing presence and abuse of authority in ep 3 as she was forcing Karl and Vlad to do skinship in front of her (especially a kiss ha!).

In these instances, it's evident that Karl was uncomfortable with her actions. Even muttering the lines, "we are not showy". Vlad's consent paired with the kiss in the cheeks are signs of deviance to Judit who has crossed the line.

While it may seem that Judit meant well through her actions, it also reflects the inherent problems that there are in the concept of allyship and fetishism of gay relationships.

Judit is written to be like that, lovely and charismatic while harboring a problematic sense of allyship, and people started to notice that in ep 3. As what the writer said, it's intentional for her to harbor such characterization as she is to face these problematic ideas as the story progresses.

But as this is also a very multifaceted matter, it's understandable why people like her as openly-accepting siblings like her in media aren't much present in the current media landscape. I don't think that people actually hate her, its just that her flawed perception and idea of allyship is something that needs to be called out and addressed.

And like what the writer said, there's nothing wrong in liking a flawed character. After all, they are humans as well. However, as new doors opened with regards to Judit, let's join her in delving deeper in what it means to be an ally of the community :D.

Overrated in comparison to which show, exactly? I’ve been watching BL shows since last year and this one blew…
Hmm... I would like to respectfully disagree. But I would also like to ask what you mean by the show being performative?

Anyways,

In the sense of derivativity, is it because of the diverse tropes inculcated into the show? If that's the case, that's intentional, as what the show's title suggests. Its glory doesn't lie on originality, rather with its celebration of queerness by placing it in familiar stories that are often present on heterosexual narratives but are scarce with queer stories. Also personally, it's so hard to tell what's original in this vast media landscape. Then again, it's just another rom-com, just gay.

But if you are not a fan of this, then I guess it's fine. I think what's important is that you appreciate the mission that there is with the show.

On the acting department, I'm thinking that you're referring to Paolo (Karl)'s acting chops as he's the only one without an acting gig in comparison to the other actors in the show with experience. I think he's hitting the notes despite being a novice in the acting scene. There's a tendency for his character to be buried because there's this sense of passivity with regards to Karl Almasen. His acting isn't explosive, but he nails in showing the viewers the awkwardness and innocence that there is to Karl. I would even like to argue that the way he is portraying Karl enables people to see themselves in the character. But hey, I still do think that there is room for improvement.

On the matters of the show being overhyped, I would like to respectfully disagree again. I think the show is doing so well in playing with tropes while injecting subversive attempts to start discussions.

In discussing the hype that there is to the show, let's try to put things into perspective. While you may not be a fan of the narrative, there are other factors that influences the hype:
1.) Queer storytellers being ardent on their drive to further queer representation by having a queer narrative that normalizes same-sex romantic attraction with familiar stories.
2.) Technicalities that are smartly utilized in telling a story.
3.) Flawed characters that are given room for improvement. I personally think the story's appeal lies in its characterization especially that the narrative plays with cliches.
4.) The directing and the set design is impeccable given the limitations because of the pandemic and budget.
5.) Musicality. Yes. I place a merit on this as the music scoring is well-done and the OSTs are smartly injected so as to add another layer to the storytelling.
6.) etc.

ahie :D. No way am I invalidating your thoughts though. Just want to add mah cents to the discussion :>.

I wish people who do eng sub for PH BLs would just type in Filipino honorifics as is like Thai honorifics. Ate…
Totally agree with this! I also think it would make viewers aware with regards a part of the culture (like how as us viewers became knowledgeable with P' and Nong as honorifics).

I agree!!! I just hope they deliver because even though this series will be released on September, I'm already…
Yeah and it makes things more meta!

But I also think that the reason they opted not to produce the screenplays in Wattpad is because of the quarantine and the grave condition of PH due to the pandemic :(.

I love what everything you said, but why do you have to insert the "incompetence of the government". As if it's…
The mention of incompetence is justified I mean let me be political here for a minute. COVID-19 response here in the Philippines is soooo bad and people are right to criticize the measures as we really are at a point where the national government isn't doing well. We are getting thousands of cases EVERY DAY, contact tracing methods are not done well, and we don't have mass testing. We also have a lot of debt without the transparency soooo yeah.

Also, I believe that Art is Never For Arts sake alone, it always has implications on politics, culture, and society. Devoiding it from such factors would water down the essence of filmmaking. Gameboys has been political (I mean LGBTQ+ alone is a political issue), but they aren't shy with their criticisms against the inadequacy in terms of the country's COVID-19 response , and Pearl's "na-flatten na ba yung curve?" remark is an example.)

But YES! Gameboys is really such a great show for tackling several issues in a span of almost 30 mins. This highlights the excellence of the whole team.

tbh I like reverse harem tropes HAHAHA.

So who are your bets?
I'm definitely rooting for Homeroom/Pe Teacher (Oh Yeonwoo) and Mr Gangster (Goo Pa Do)

Yeonwoo has this charming puppy-like appearance and demeanor around Aejeong and it's so endearing.

While for Pa-do, their dynamics are interesting. Both of them are also single parents so I think that can be a factor..

I know that probably a lot of people are weirded out with Pearl's constant support with the two and that it might appear meddlesome for some. I really think that this is just cultural? Best friends, given the consent, usually act as the bridge when one courts a person. It's also established that Gav and Pearl have this so-called "mamshie relationship", which usually involves friendships between gays or gays and allies especially women.

Also, I think that Pearl acts as the catalyst to further character development for both since ever since her appearance, we now saw the different layers that Gav and Cai have.

However, I just felt that the closeness between Cai and Pearl was pretty sudden, but given the limitations due to the quarantine, I can forgive that aspect.

I can still say that the series is still my cup of tea. It shows the capabilities of Filipino creators--not to mention that there are a lot of limitations right now. Imagine if there isn't one?

But right now, I just wish that they tone down with the punchlines. I can't really love Gavreel's character because of that HAHAHA.

im halfway through episode 2 and i feel same... like... why am i wathcing this? what is the story, what is the…
Slice-of-life shows tend to be like this. Basically, this drama is an amalgamation of different stories that are experienced by doctors and medical practitioners. I do get the sentiment on such shows being "plotless" but I think that's the point. It doesn't follow a certain plot because reality isn't bind to such. Such shows focus more on character building-- connecting stories of the characters to then create a storyline.

To be honest, this is the Filipino rom-com that I'm really excited to see. I've read the drafts of the script for the first 3 episodes of this and let me tell you the reasons why I'm ecstatic for this:

1.) This show is written by a gay man. This is a huge thing not only for the sake of representation but having a gay writer write stories about relationships within the LGBTQ+ community provides more insight--one that is honest and realistic

(From the available drafts of the script, the writer has already shed light on the internalized homophobia that is existing within the confines of the LGBTQ+ community. HE REALLY IS IN THERE NOT JUST TO GIVE US BUTTERFLIES IN THE STOMACH, BUT ALSO TO EDUCATE Y'ALL!)

2.) This show tells varying stories about relationships between people in the spectrum. Talk about inclusivity and diversity right?

3.) To provide a more honest and real portrayal of these stories, the team aims to cast LGBTQ+ actors for LGBTQ+ roles. In order for the actors to have a good grasp of their roles, the team also wants to provide gender workshops before formally starting their shooting.

Oh just a fun fact, the team is really trying to garner LGBTQ+ talents for this, not only for the acting department but also for its music. The team has been finding LGBTQ+ singers so that they can use their songs for the show. The music scorer for this project is a member of the rainbow spectrum as well :).

Once "Gaya sa Pelikula" starts to air, I hope that we'll support this from the bottom of our hearts <3

Ep 3 was such a treat :<.

TBH, I'm still expecting more from Cairo. As of now, he feels a little flat for me. I wish that the writers would reveal more of his personality since his tsundere self starts to become tiresome for the viewers. While for Gavreel, we are seeing more and more depth from him. However, I must say that I'm not a fan of his aggressive flirting but maybe that's just me or sumthin.

Gameboys is a promising show that is formulated during these challenging times. The fact that they are able to deliver with such quality given the limitations is really amazing.

AAACK THOUGHTS:

1.) Tbh at this point I don't want anyone to form a romantic relationship with Songhwa :<

At first I liked Chihong for her, but Ep 11 revealed that he was starting to get insensitive thus crossing boundaries which contradicts his promise to Songhwa of NOT crossing those. He's already having a hard time containing his feelings and his actions result to awkwardness. He tries too much to match with Ikjun, a manifestation of insecurity. I think that's a no-no, a red flag if you will. Nevertheless, I still like Chihong as an individual character since it's still so human, but I really don't think that he should pursue Songhwa at this point of the story and his character development.

As for Ikjun, as much as I love their dynamics, I'm iffy about them entering a relationship knowing how their friendship with the whole lacking 5 is built so strongly. Also, I think it's weird since the drama has been pushing a narrative in which "men and women can be bestfriends" through Jongsu and Rosa's characters. While it may add another layer to the story, I don't really fancy the fact that a relationship would blossom in a 20-year friendship. But if it happens, I would like to see how the writers would maneuver with the story.

2.) I'm really loving the slow-burn romance between Minha-Seokhyung (GomGom) and most especially Gyeoul- Jeongwon (WinterGarden). I love this feeling of being ignited into flames by this slow yet steady developments with their love lines.

3.) I honestly don't want Gyeoul to follow Mama Rosa's plea. I do understand Mama Rosa's convictions and I do get why there's a hint of selfishness on her actions (she probably sees how miserable his bestie Jongsu is with him not being able to see his children and she really does fancy and adore her son), but it would be nice if Jeongwon decides for himself, his sanity, his calling, his truth, and his feelings. It would also be great if he stays not because of Gyeoul superlatively, but rather because he sees himself in being a doctor-- that his priesthood dream surfaced yet again as a mere result of amalgamated stress, that it's a form of escapism.

4.) I love the maturity that the Junhwan-Iksun ship projects. It really is a breathe of fresh air to see such a mature relationship onscreen. However, I'm worried as to what will happen with their relationship since LDRs is a hard thing to face.

5.) Why does Seokhyung have to suffer like this? His character arc has been severely sad, but these experiences is what probably built his empathy. I love his character but Writer Lee Woojung, please tone down the hurt HAHAHA.

AAACK we only have an episode before S1 concludes, I'm nervous yet excited YEEEEEEET!!!
