Essentially, the red string arc has nothing to do with a romance. It creates some coincidences that seem like they are bringing the FL and 2ML together, but they aren't really. It seems to really be about learning trust and patience for the ML and - IMO - pressing the repeated point that /humans/ have the power of choice.
