All of my favorite scenes in the previous version feels so rushed over in this version... it kinda doesn't even…
I'm so sad that they changed the beauty competition into a boring cooking one. One of my favorite parts in the manga was seeing her interact with a bunch of kids in that last round.
finally, someone who actually read the manga. i couldn't word it out better than this. yes, characters, characters,…
Yesss! 100% agree with your comment. The thing is, even when Makino is yelling at Doumyoji, over time she does develop a soft spot for him and actually felt guilty about betraying him for Rei in the beginning. Her feelings for him were gradual but also eventually very strong. San Cai barely acts like she cares for Dao Ming Si so it's not surprising why so many people are frustrated with her character. I blame the writers and the director.
I have actually been reading the manga side by side with the drama lol. It keeps me entertained because the drama keeps boring me...
I really really wanted to like this version. I enjoyed the first 6 episodes. But after that, I felt like it got draggy and the changes are really noticeable from the original manga. I know changes are necessary for adaptations, but you can't change the core of the characters otherwise they aren't the original characters that we know and love anymore.
Spoiler alert coming up : I saw a lot of comments complaining about why San Cai hasn't fallen in love with Dao Ming Si yet or why she's slow to show affection. In the original story, Dao Ming Si (Doumyoji) was a much bigger A-hole with the bullying. It made sense that San Cai would be more hung up on Rei. So when you make Ah Si nicer and less intimidating early on, then San Cai comes off as ungrateful and unloving. Here's a fun fact: In the original manga, Dao Ming Si wasn't even supposed to be the male lead. The mangaka switched it to him midway through the series because he was more popular.
It's really hard for me the enjoy the changes when they've turned Hana Yori Dango into a Chinese propaganda machine. It's so glaringly obvious every time they talk about how they earned their own money. Or how Dao Ming Si is super smart. He's supposed to be charmingly dumb haha. All his grammatical mistakes in the Taiwanese version always had me busting a gut. And whenever he talks about money, his over emphasis on how he earned that money himself is a reminder of the Chinese censors at work not wanting the audience to think they came from privilege.
The Taiwanese 2001 version definitely lacked in the acting department but it made up for that with charm and a lot of heart from the original manga. It best captured the spirit of the original characters. And in my opinion, the best pineapple hair still goes to Jerry Yan.
Despite all this, I don't hate the 2018 version. I'm just feeling bored with some of the episodes that feel like filler or out of place.
