I was mostly pleased with this drama. It stuck very closely to the novel most of the time. I loved that they actually acted out a lot of the in-game parts with the characters, and frankly found that WeiWei was much better as the super-competent swordswoman vs the 'real-life' campus flower.
I felt the majority of the actors portrayed their characters very well, especially Xiao Nai; he had a very good mix of extremely competent and tender which can be hard to do with the CEO type character. The actress playing WeiWei was great at the action sequences, but I found her a bit lacking in the real-world sequences. She played generalized anxiety very well, but was super stiff in all of the romantic sequences. Xiao Nai would be kissing her passionately/masterfully and she would barely respond. It was understandable in the first few, but after like half the series, you would expect her to at least soften a bit, not stand there like a rock the whole time.
The graphics were really good for the in-game sequences. I also liked the attention to detail in all of the costumes, not just those of the leads. The monsters were well made as well.
I smiled a lot during this series. It's nice having a male lead who is on top of things but not a dick, as well as an intelligent female lead. I did cry a bit during one part of Erxi's story arc. I was very surprised at how close the censors allowed the series to come with the bro-mance of the two guys who coupled up in the novel extras.
I'm rereading it for the third time now. There are grammar issues with the auto-translate and other problems, but it's still good enough to understand what's going on.
One of the very few dramas based on a novel where I enjoyed both how well it stuck to the original story, but also enjoyed where it deviated for the most part, as well.
I was rather bummed out that they didn't include the Sci-fi movie that the leads shot together in the drama, because mostly naked ML plus FL as a powerful commander would have been awesome to see acted out.
I liked how things turned out between FL and Xiao Zhao in the drama better than in the novel, though both have good reasons/charms. I do wish they had left Xiao Zhao's grandpa in, though. Small role, but important.
