Title The Uncanny Counter Spoiler
LOL, what?.
I can relate, they did a good job of making him human, and seeing how also he behaved with the children was a pleasant surprise. It’s clear that he was self aware, thinking that he himself may have been different had he not been so terribly mistreated, and that’s reflected by his kindness - and dare I say devotion with the children. I also felt for him with the vulnerability to his father and the jealousy of his father’s “family” as it looks very much like all he ever wanted was his father’s acceptance and love. In many ways a character that seems to pure to be ‘just a villain’ to me.

It’s also interesting because of how that is the human and not the evil spirit, and upon changing hosts, the spirit has no empathy for children. This shows that the human still had some degree of control in the relationship.

Original writer, Yeo Ji Na, is credited up until Episode 12. I think from Episode 13 till the end, Director Yoo…
Thanks for your reply! That clears thing up, thankfully I didn’t let it put me off and I’m still enjoying it very much at episode 13. I had been quite worried because I’m someone who can be a bit picky about writing.

Season 2 does sound good to me even if they could have completed it in one season because I really like the casting and characters, so I’ll be waiting!

Also, does anyone know what song is played at the end of episode 4 just before the ending kicks in?
Thank you, although it isn’t that one either, I’m not sure if they used a non-OST song, as I’ve checked what OST has been released and it isn’t one of them. Again, thank you for still taking your time, replying and trying to help. :)

Edit : just found it (credit to Siri) - and it isn’t an OST song, it’s called Run by Jinbo feat. Joe Wonsun and Zion.T and it’s a 2019 single.

Wait! Rewatching episode 4, it wasn’t Close Your Eyes I was referring to, it was the song Sin listens to while doing what he does before the ending, do you know that one? Pretty sure it’s a female voice.

Could someone please explain the writer situation to me? I’ve heard that the writer get changed but don’t know at what point in the series or why...

Also, on episode 11 currently, and going to rewatch up to this point because there were bits that I sped through because of impatience or stressful cliffhangers before sleep. So I want to take the time and appreciate details I may have missed.

Still loving this show though, and so far the emotion has been done very well, with close friendships, family related moments, and the forming of new bonds between the counters. The main cast are lovely to see on screen, they all nail it bringing a likeable quality to each of their individual characters, I particularly love Ahn Suk Hwan’s character, so much fun! The supporting cast are definitely good too, with the best friends and grandparents really standing out for me.

You did not like W? :(
Thanks to you too for replying!

As far as this genre goes, The only ones I have completed I are all mentioned above. I am aware of a few others, there’s Unexpected and Love Better Than Immortality - both of which I started but didn’t know if I’d continue. Of what I haven’t watched, there’s The Eternal Love, and The King : Eternal Monarch. There’s a few others (recent 2016-2021) that I haven’t looked at but seen in the search results.
Link to search results : https://kisskh.at/search?adv=titles&ty=68&th=619&re=2014,2021&so=relevance&page=2

Also, it depends upon how much of a stretch on the genre you’re thinking of, but I’d be tempted to say Alice in Borderland (it’s tagged parallel universe but does feature travel from one world to another - sort of).

I do read webtoons and manga, although not as much as I did at one point. I also watch anime - which was my gateway to dramas. Also, it’s interesting you mentioned Stephen King, as although I haven’t read the books, I’ve seen a few of his films at the cinema with friends. Are you also a fan of horror / psychological / thriller then?

You did not like W? :(
Sorry, but although the premise was good, the writer(s) didn’t set specific rules and stick to them, and it just became far too chaotic for my liking.

I would have liked it had the writing set consistent rules and had the show not also just felt like a massive tangent in the second half. The first 3-4 episodes were great and I loved it, but then the writers started making so many weird and inconsistent choices that I couldn’t enjoy it. The original set of rules was fine while they stuck to it, but that didn’t last long. Also, unlike some viewers I didn’t find it confusing, just couldn’t enjoy it.

I guess it’s because (for me) consistent and well done world building in cases of dramas like these is important. If you look at the three I did enjoy, they all have a specific set of rules in world building and they stick to it without going on any massive weird tangents - and they don’t break the rules they set. In shows with travel of any kind between worlds, or even sci-fi or fantasy, the rules of how everything works as just as important as any other aspect, if not the most important.

Again, all of this is just my preference and opinion, and I know that W is the most popular show in this genre, as well as having high ratings, but it just didn’t float my boat in the end.

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I have so far! I’m on episode 4, but I’m loving everything about it. The friendships and dynamics between the characters is great, so far the tone is consistent and even so early on there has been touching moments.

I thought the HIStory franchise was cancel?
It looked like it at the time MODC ended, as I’m pretty sure that the main writers had been announced to be leaving the production. I don’t know which writer(s) left, but I suspect Lin Pei Yu (who wrote Obsessed, Right or Wrong, Boundary Crossing and Trapped). This is because Lin Pei Yu has gone on to write We Best Love (currently airing and upcoming) which could end up competing with HIStory if it gets renewed. There has also been no announcements about who will be writing HIStory4 - and many strongly criticise the writer of MODC for the last episodes.

Shortly after this news everyone was discussing how it was the end of HIStory, not that I know what sources that same from.

Around a year after MODC finished airing, there was announcement that there would be a renewal due to the popularity (mainly of MODC) internationally. The words used in the announcement strongly implied that there would be a direct sequel to MODC - which presumably would focus on the same characters.

There hasn’t been much heard since about MODC2.

Close to You has been pretty much confirmed - the only thing missing in number and length of episodes and an air date, with cast being announced as well as synopsis and regular updates on social media.

Quite a bit of UK crime dramas follow one crime over the course of a season though. You’ve got Broadchurch,…
Thanks for your reply!

It’s mostly USA and Canadian crime dramas, of the shows you mentioned, I’ve only heard of one of them (Broadchurch) and I do live in the UK (although quite possibly under a rock). In terms of UK crime drama it’s more Father Brown and similar shows. Other than that, is’s NCIS, Hawaii Five-O, Criminal Minds, Murdoch Mysteries, The Rookie, Death in Paradise etc.

Sorry if me mentioning UK crime drama threw you off, I do watch UK crime dramas, but all of them are episodic of the ones I watch.

As for the romance, I do agree about them having much more of a proper, adult approach with actual deep conversations. I have also seen the actors before and they are clearly good friends with chemistry. For me, it may well be the setup between them, seeing as they are going from total strangers to romance. I’m not saying that it’s poorly done, it’s very well done. In terms of emotion, I’m more of a friends -> closer -> romance kind of person, although I can also be okay with characters who know each other and start as neutrals or end up competing/at odds with each other who grow to be close. It’s quite possibly because I can’t relate to feeling (any kind of) attraction to someone I don’t know very well.

One romance crime drama I can think of that I loved is Flower of Evil, which shared a format with this, the main differences being the setup (married couple) and the fact it was heterosexual rather than LGBT. Flower of Evil is also something that I felt strong emotional connection to unlike here, and I found the married couple factor more romantic than anything else I had watched.

Overall, I’ve discovered myself to be more of a sucker for friendship than romance, hence my not feeling much with this show. As far as the rest of Thai BL, I’m very fed up of the same formula you mentioned of the hormonal students who trip up at the most convenient moments. The romance here is far preferable to most Thai BL I can think of, bar only one. I’m also fine with backseat romances. It’s just what floats my boat I guess.

The further in to this show I get (currently just finished episode 7) the more apathetic I end up feeling and the more jarring the soundtrack gets...

While some of it is interesting on the crime side, the romance has left me feeling nothing thus far, possibly because of the lack of emotion involved. I guess I was expecting too much. Again, this isn’t a bad show, it is very well done considering the market it is aimed at. I’m just slowly caring less and less about it.

Maybe I’ve watched too much crime drama, as this isn’t gripping me. When it comes to Crime, I’m used to longer running shows (seasonal from UK, Canada or USA) with an episodic format where typically it’s one crime per episode with a few exceptions, and other than that characters living their lives being the side plot. Although format wise, there have been some Crime Kdramas (not episodic) that have proven to get me hooked. It feels at though here the crime was actually a setup for the Bun’s character motivation and for him to meet Tan. I haven’t found myself rooting for either of the main characters though, and the ones I care about are minor - the nurse and the school boy.

I’m probably going to finish this, but it hasn’t been great for me, even though I am very happy at the possibility this marks a point at which BL as a genre branches out from High School and University - if you’d call this BL (not completely sure because it doesn’t watch the same way other BL does).

(Not trying to be negative towards the show, it just isn’t proving to be my cup of tea)

Yup. Xion really burned a lot of bridges.Miko confirmed he will not be apart of it either on Instagram.
Sorry about this being late, I only just saw this...

What did Xion do that burned so many bridges? It must be serious if both leading actors confirmed that they would not work on the project.

Very confused. I thought that the occupation of Earth’s character had to be changed because of the military being a very sensitive issue in Thailand. What was the problem if not this?

I see that the synopsis hasn’t changed the occupation of his character, so has some other kind of rewrite gone on to cause such dramatic delay?

I originally planned on watching this when it was first mentioned in 2018/2019 but am no longer planning to because I can’t be bothered with more GMMTV BL at the moment. I’ll watch Not Me, but that’ll probably be it for this year. Still curious about what got changed and here what didn’t - I even remember the original trailer. What happened?

This looks interesting. I’m glad it seems that Manner of Death marks some kind of shift towards more variety in BL/LGBT dramas in Thailand, being that this has an actual interesting setup and plot by the looks of things. I’d probably watch this even without the romance because it does sound worth a watch.

Plus... who doesn’t love a good mafia plot? Genuinely excited for this one.

Gosh... episode 6... the thing that irritates me is if it weren’t for his background and complex about the high mono crime rate he wouldn’t be in quite the same position. Also, we aren’t getting as much character development, yes, but the show is very short, so fitting that in wouldn’t be easy.

I like the Joo Haeng and Min Jae, think they’re fun. Yoo Han’s character doesn’t make much sense, as there is very lacking development. Although in spite of most of this I’m not sure I’d call it disappointing. Korea is only just starting to release shows like this and they’ll probably get things wrong before getting it right. Just take a look at HIStory, season 1 is full of stereotypes and some of the writing is rather lacklustre - the same person wrote Obsessed, Right or Wrong, Crossing the Line, and Trapped, with clear evidence of improvement year on year.

Anyhow, it is what it is and I’d say it isn’t particularly good or bad. Just meh, although I’ll keep watching shows like this because I’m curious to see what sort of direction Korea takes on the topic, being that there is clear stylistic variation between all of the other nations that produce BL, from Thailand to Taiwan to Japan etc.

Okay, I like most of the show, apart from the editing when said “colour rush” happens, that I find over the top - it would be fine if mainly demonstrated by say increased saturation combined with VFX over the eyes, but it just breaks the immersion for me.

I do find the theme interesting though, if science fiction in regard to mono vs actually totally colour blind. It’s also interesting because I met someone who was totally colourblind, and spoke with them about it because I was curious after it came up in conversation, and he had said that he is told by everyone about colours but equally it is impossible to prove to him that they exist. Interestingly he wore mainly black and white wardrobe wise, meaning that clashing coloured outfits would be avoided.

There’s also some comment to be had here of the metaphor of colour in this show, much like other addictive things in life, you don’t want something you’ve never experienced until you’ve experienced/tried it, and it’s easy to reach a point of never having enough. Reminds me of the song by Three Days Grace titled “Chasing the first time”, because many experiences are the most exciting and rewarding the first time, and you end up perpetually chasing that new feeling that will never quite be the same again. Not sure if I just sound like a ranting lunatic here but that’s just something that popped to mind.

I like the overall vibe to the show if not for the editing choice, but I’ll forgive it because the rest of it is pulling its weight and doing well. Looking forward to the rest of this :)
