Woke up to the most unexpected but exciting news, been patiently waiting for his acting debut and now I need to binge watch this series. I'm so happy as an Ai and wish him all the best for more acting roles in the future πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

No problem, but in terms of Gu Xiang's character subverting the stereotypes I believe the best argument is her ability to defend herself and those around her, hence she's not the damsel in distress stereotype. My favorite scene was in the tavern where she intervenes a bunch of drunk men harassing a girl to sing a song and she ends up reciting the lyrics ending with a slap to their faces πŸ˜†. I would also describe her as being assertive, as she is often outspoken and direct with her opinions, an example would be when she met Cao Wei Ning and he asked her if she liked to fight and her response was "What, can't I?"

I don't know if you have watched The Long Ballad but the character Princess Le Yan in my opinion fits the stereotype in the beginning of the drama where she plays the soft spoken, naïve, damsel in distress submissive role. An example of the damsel in distress and naivety is when she tried to help a stranger (pretending to be drunk), who than covers her mouth with a cloth, because his intentions were to kidnap and sell her as a slave. She ends up being held captive for a period of time, where she realises that she cannot fight her captors and feels helpless, because she does not possess the skills to fight or defend herself. Later on, she does have character growth where she becomes more assertive in fulfilling her role as the Princess in order to help her people, as she witnessed and experienced their hardships with poverty and starvation. By contrast, her best friend Li Chang Ge subverts the stereotype, as she is assertive, outspoken, stubborn, intelligent, a skilled swordswoman, at one point becomes a battle master strategist and most integral to the love element, is that she is seen as an equal by her romantic interest. I hope this helps and wish you all the best with your essay 😊
